Macatoo Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Located in the beautiful Okavango Delta, Macatoo Camp, an African Horseback Safaris property, provides luxurious accommodations and a unique and thrilling opportunity to explore the Delta via horseback.

The camp has eight large and airy tents that blend harmoniously into their natural setting. Each tent is set on a large, raised wooden platform with panoramic views of the flood plains. There are a variety of tents available for all types of people and groups from single, twin, double, and triple tents. The family and friends suite comprises two tents linked by a raised walkway and a private viewing deck. The romantic, newly-built honeymoon tent is perfect for couples celebrating any special occasion and comes with an additional deck for private dining as well as a raised double tub bath.

The camp is located in the stunning Okavango Delta. Known as the “jewel of the Kalahari” the flood waters cover an area of over anywhere from 9,000 square miles in the drier season to 13,000 square miles in the wetter season. As part of the African Rift Valley System, its geography has resulted in the ‘capture’ of the Okavango River that has formed the Delta and its extensive waterways, swamps, flooded grasslands, and floodplains. This oasis attracts some of the world’s highest concentrations of wildlife, including all the quintessential African mammals from lion to elephant to hippo to giraffe to rhino to zebra as well as crocodiles, hyena, cheetah, leopard, sable antelope, buffalo, zebra, warthog, and chacma baboon. The delta is also the home of hundreds of bird species as well.

The main draw to the camp is the horseback safaris. Since annual flooding makes some areas of the Okavango inaccessible to vehicles, horses become an ideal way to explore. Guests should be reasonably riding fit and confident at all paces as the rides are long. The pace of riding varies between fast and thrilling gallops alongside giraffe, zebra, and buck, on both water and on land. There are nearly fifty horses of all shapes and sizes as well as both English and western saddles available. Other activities include daily game drives in 4×4 vehicles, bird watching, fishing, helicopter rides, and boat rides through the Delta. One of the best ways to discover the channels and aquatic life is by a mokoro ride in a traditional dugout canoe.

Well-lit pathways link all the tents with the communal mess tent and dining deck. There is a refreshing pool and a sundeck for relaxing with a good book. At night, everyone gathers around the firepit for a drink and a story. A short drive away is a magical tree platform where guests enjoy lunches, drinks, and even the occasional sleepover.
