Gunn’s Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Located in the western Okavango Delta and overlooking Chiefs Island and the game-rich Moremi Game Reserve, Gunn’s Camp provides privacy and tranquility.

Accommodations at the camp consist of six newly rebuilt Kenyan-style Meru tents set on wooden platforms overlooking the Delta. Each tent is furnished with an eclectic mixture of solid wood and African furniture. There is a comfy bedroom and a separate cozy sitting area. The en suite bathrooms feature standalone baths and outside private showers. Additionally, each tent comes with its own private veranda outfitted with comfortable chairs making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the spectacular sights and sounds of the Okavango.

The camp is situated in the world-famous Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the jewel of the Kalahari the flood waters cover an area of over anywhere from 9,000 square miles in the drier season to 13,000 square miles in the wetter season. As part of the African Rift Valley System, its geography has resulted in the ‘capture’ of the Okavango River that has formed the Delta and its extensive waterways, swamps, flooded grasslands, and floodplains. Not surprisingly, this oasis attracts some of the world’s highest concentrations of wildlife, including everything from lion to elephant to hippo to giraffe to rhino to zebra as well as crocodiles, hyena, cheetah, leopard, sable antelope, buffalo, zebra, warthog, and chacma baboon.

The camp’s activities include motor boat cruises, mokoro excursions, and guided nature walks. The walks take place on Chief’s Island, in the Moremi Game Reserve, separated from Ntswi Island by the Boro River channel. Each guide takes two guests by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe steered by a long pole, to different areas of the Reserve for a chance to learn about the habits of the smaller animals, spot some of the 500 birds and learn their calls, as well as identifying plant-life and their medicinal uses. Locally-born guides offer a rare insight into the unique ways of life in the Delta.

The tents are connected to the main area via a raised wooden walkway, lit with lanterns at night, allowing access across the flood plain. The main camp houses a lounge, an elevated main bar, and a dining room with a camp fire and a refreshing swimming pool. An eco-friendly property, the camp runs off solar power.
