Magical Kenya, that’s the name the tourism board uses and for good reason. The scenery of Kenya is not only unique but spectacular with the magic to compel visitors to explore the dramatic heights of snow-capped Mount Kenya to the Great Rift Valley, both sitting astride the equator. With sixty national parks and reserves, the country teems with wildlife and excellent opportunities to explore them. An adventurer’s paradise, Kenya offers a wide array of thrilling experiences from the traditional safari to mountain climbing, hot air ballooning, giraffe encounters, and snorkeling in the Indian Ocean.
The landscape in Kenya is not only dramatic but diverse. In a single trip to Kenya, travelers can visit tropical forests, beautiful beaches, and deserts, climb mountains, and explore the wild. The most infamous experience being the annual Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara between mid-August and late October as hundreds of thousands of wildebeests, zebras, Thomson’s gazelles, topi, and eland flood the region from the Serengeti. Another unique safari experience, Amboseli National Park is known for its large elephant herds. Whereas, Lake Nakuru has not only has the largest rhino population, it’s a popular spot for flamingoes and pelicans feeding on the blue-green spirulina.
A successful country, Kenya is home to forty-two unique and diverse cultures. The capital city, Nairobi is a vibrant, modern city that begs to be explored as much as the national parks. Top sights include the Karen Blixen Museum, Giraffe Centre, and the black rhinos of Nairobi National Park.
Kenya is the country that most people associate with Africa, and it serves well as a representative for the African safari industry. It is the birthplace of the traditional safari and the very name “Safari” has its Swahili origins here. The Kenyans have been doing safaris for a long time and have perfected the art of it. The guides are superb and the game viewing is incredible. The only real challenge is finding an experience that is intimate and not too mainstream. At Piper & Heath, we align ourselves with operators that own smaller, more exclusive camps, and who offer unique more private activities. Our aim in Kenya is to offer holidays that are not typical and still give that special “Safari Feeling.”
