Pelo Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

On a heart-shaped island in the middle Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Pelo Camp is an intimate and luxurious safari destination.

The word Pelo means heart in Setswana. Five spacious guest tents provide a classic safari accommodation with a touch of luxury. Each tent has double beds and an en suite bathroom with a copper vanity basin, both an indoor and outdoor bucket shower, and flush toilets. For added privacy and comfort, the tents include a shaded outdoor veranda with stunning views of the Delta. At night, the decks are lit by romantic lantern light.

With an eco-friendly design and no permanent structures, Pelo Camp offers a wetlands delta experience in the private Jao Concession on the boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. Deep in the world-famous Okavango Delta, the small heart-shaped island is surrounded by permanent water. One of the best areas to see sitatunga and red lechwe, the camp wildlife concentrations change with the water flow from season to season. Occasionally lion, cheetah, and leopard are spotted. Throughout the year, sightings of hippo, crocodile, tsessebe, elephant, wildebeest, and zebra are common. Flourishing birdlife is always exciting and features species such as Pel’s fishing owl, African and lesser jacanas, slaty egret, African pygmy goose, and western banded snake-eagle.

There are plenty of activities available at the camp. Water-based game viewing in six two-seater mokoros, traditional dug-out canoes, allow for unique opportunities to embrace authentic Africa. Other activities offered at Pelo Camp include motor boat excursions in the waterways surrounding the camp in a twelve-seater boat, perfect for spotting red lechwe, elephants, and spotted-neck otters. Anglers will enjoy seasonal fishing with catch and release encouraged and plenty of tilapia and the famous tigerfish. Nature walks explore the low sandy islands and learn about the River Bushmen’s way of life.

Nestled among massive wild date palms, jackalberry, and Natal mahogany trees, Pelo Camp’s main area features a tented dining area and lounge. Brunch is served on the viewing deck or privately on a table set in the clear Delta waters. The outdoor boma is perfect an al fresco dinner or for relaxing under the starry African sky and enjoying the fire with after-dinner drink. The camp’s swimming pool provides a refreshing respite from the heat of the days. There is also a raised platform built onto an old anthill. Pelo Camp is run on 100% solar power and uses efficient solar geysers to heat water.
