Situated on a semi-permanent site within the Khwai Community Area on the eastern border of the Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai Tented Camp provides an authentic experience in harmony with nature and the local Khwai community.

Accommodations consist of six spacious and comfortable meru style tents with a total of twelve beds. Built on raised decks, each tent has an unobstructed view of the lagoon as well as views of the surrounding bush. Each tent has its own private en-suite bathroom with shower, wash basins, and flushing toilet as well as an outdoor “al-fresco” bucket shower. In an effort to ensure conservation of the natural environment and to limit impact, the camp has no permanent structures, and everything can be removed to return the site to its original natural state.

Khwai Tented Camp is located on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta in a community-run concession that supports the local community with proceeds generated from tourism. The lagoon that stretches out in front of the camp flows into the Khwai River, providing a natural border to the community area from the adjacent Moremi Game Reserve. The Khwai River is a source of life for the region, attracting an abundance of wildlife and supporting diverse ecosystems.

Daytime game drives can be taken to explore the area and view its abundant wildlife, including elephant, buffalo, zebra, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, eland, sable, hippo, and hyena, while night drives are an opportunity to see some of the more shy nocturnal animals. For a more immersive, up close, and personal experience, guests can take a nature walk exploring the local leadwood and mopane woodlands and adjacent grasslands. Both the night drives and nature walks would otherwise not be available in a national park or game reserve.

One of the unique experiences in the area is a cultural visit to the local Khwai village, which is home to approximately 400 BaBukakhwe or River Bushmen who are working to conserve the environment through ecotourism. Other activities include bird watching and mokoro safaris (depending on the water levels).

Standing on the main deck in the camp’s common area, guests can enjoy stunning views of the lagoon. Or take in the views while lounging around the fire pit or in the infinity pool. The communal dining area, bar, and lounge is also a great place to sip on cocktails, and nights are best spent with relaxing conversation around the fire in the boma. In line with the camp’s mission to limit impact, electricity is provided by a solar farm, and there is a sewage purity system to recycle water used in the camp. There are battery charging facilities available in the main area and a backup generator is also in use.
