Tau Pan Camp, together with its sister camp Nxai Pan Camp, is situated in Botswana’s Central Kalahari Game Reserve, one of the largest protected habitats in the world at over 20,000 square miles.
Accommodation at Tau Pan is in nine desert-friendly thatched chalets. The thatching and ceiling fans helps keep the chalets at a comfortable temperature all year round. Seven of the chalets have twin beds which can be converted to doubles. There is a family unit with an additional twin bedroom. Each chalet has an en suite bathroom with double wash basins and both an indoor and an outdoor shower. All the rooms enjoy a private raised wooden deck overlooking the sands and the open pan.
Tau Pan is the first semi-permanent camp inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and offers truly incredible views from the ridge of an ancient sand dune, an unusual experience in a land as flat as Botswana. Animals such as springbok, oryx, kudu, zebra, and wildebeest congregate in their thousands on the pans. The high concentrations of grazers attract predators including cheetah, Kalahari black-maned lion, black-backed jackals, brown hyena, and wild dog. Bird watchers can enjoy the many species including Kori bustard, black korhaan, Namaqua sandgrouse, crimson-breasted shrike, ostrich, and many raptors such as pale-chanting goshawk, rock kestrel, and bateleur.
