Tau Pan Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Tau Pan Camp, together with its sister camp Nxai Pan Camp, is situated in Botswana’s Central Kalahari Game Reserve, one of the largest protected habitats in the world at over 20,000 square miles.

Accommodation at Tau Pan is in nine desert-friendly thatched chalets. The thatching and ceiling fans helps keep the chalets at a comfortable temperature all year round. Seven of the chalets have twin beds which can be converted to doubles. There is a family unit with an additional twin bedroom. Each chalet has an en suite bathroom with double wash basins and both an indoor and an outdoor shower. All the rooms enjoy a private raised wooden deck overlooking the sands and the open pan.

Tau Pan is the first semi-permanent camp inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and offers truly incredible views from the ridge of an ancient sand dune, an unusual experience in a land as flat as Botswana. Animals such as springbok, oryx, kudu, zebra, and wildebeest congregate in their thousands on the pans. The high concentrations of grazers attract predators including cheetah, Kalahari black-maned lion, black-backed jackals, brown hyena, and wild dog. Bird watchers can enjoy the many species including Kori bustard, black korhaan, Namaqua sandgrouse, crimson-breasted shrike, ostrich, and many raptors such as pale-chanting goshawk, rock kestrel, and bateleur.

Morning and afternoon game drives led by expert guides are mainly on the Tau Pan, but full-day trips to Deception Valley, Sunday, and Piper and Passarge Pan, and other nearby locales can be arranged. Nature walks with one of the Bushman tracker provides a more intimate and detailed inspection of the flora and fauna of the Kalahari. The clear African skies are perfect for star-gazing. While bush brunches can be enjoyed while taking in the stark beauty of the Tau Pan.

The main area has a crescent-shaped, thatched roof and comprises a viewing deck, a lounge, a dining area, a library, and a curio shop. A huge viewing deck overlooks a permanent waterhole. The fire pit in the middle of the deck is where guests congregate for early morning coffee and late-night drinks.A simple breakfast is eaten around the fire before the morning activity, and upon return a hearty brunch buffet is served. Afternoon tea precedes the evening activity, and a buffet dinner ends the day. An eco-friendly property, solar power alone is used for generating electricity, including heating water and pumping water.
