Mokete Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Just to the east of the iconic Okavango Delta, Mokete Camp is uniquely situated to take advantage of the vast open plains of Mababe depression where nutrient rich water drains from the Okavango to create a rich bio-diverse landscape.

Mokete Camp will have nine tented rooms with running water, en-suite bathrooms, and the exceptional comfort that one could expect from the team at Wilderness. Unique to Mokete, each canvas tent will have a roof that slides away to reveal the breathtaking stars that are so prominent in remote northern Botswana. Private wooden decks are fitted with comfortable chairs and provide the perfect spot to unwind and watch the wildlife roam past.

Mokete is a solar-powered tented camp and intentionally minimalist, yet does not forego any comfort. Due to the open layout and high density of wildlife, only guests 16 and older are permitted. There is a swimming pool for warm afternoons and a star bed for cool evenings under the sky.

Located between two of Botswana’s iconic national parks, Mababe spans nearly 200 square miles on the eastern fringe of the Okavango Delta. Unique to Botswana, the area’s nutrient-rich grasses are fed with a constant supply of water thanks to the Mababe River and the waters of the Okavango, which drain into the Mababe wetland. The result is a rich landscape with three distinct habitats: grassland plains, mopane/acacia woodlands, and the marsh system fed by the Mababe River. This environment supports impressive herds of plains game, an abundance of predators, and an array of bird life. Each year, the marsh is reinvigorated by the seasonal inflow, which attracts wildlife from all directions.

Twice-daily game drives in open 4×4 vehicles allow for optimum game viewing. Opportunities abound to photograph the magnificent wildlife in its natural habitat and the renowned mega herds that make their way across this private wilderness area. A night game drive with a spotlight is perfect for highlighting captivating nocturnal animals. Walking safaris led by expert guides allow up-close and personal encounters.

The region is also a bird watcher’s dream, with plenty of chances to see exceptional bird life. Guests may also enjoy a visit to Mababe village for an authentic insight into the culture of the area. Listen to stories told by village elders and learn the art of tracking and basket-weaving, ancient practices in this part of the world. Guests also have the option of soaring over Mababe on a scenic helicopter flight.
