Camp Xakanaxa

PLAN MY TRIP

Overlooking a lagoon on the Khwai River in Botswana’s famous Moremi Game Reserve, Xakanaxa Camp is the only property in the area to offer guests a year-round land and water experience.

Accommodation at the camp consists of thirteen spacious and comfortable twin-bedded tents built on raised decks. These en suite rooms feature showers, hand basins, and toilet facilities. The camp can house up to twenty-four guests plus a tour leader. The tents enjoy a water sprinkler system that aids cooling in the midday heat. Each tented suite also enjoys a private viewing deck with comfortable loungers, perfect for relaxing and viewing the beauty of the lagoon.

The camp is located in the Moremi Game Reserve, rated as one of Africa’s finest game viewing areas. It provides sanctuary to abundant herds of elephant, sable, giraffe, tsessebe, lechwe, wildebeest, impala, and waterbuck. Predators include lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and hyena. This region is a hugely varying habitat, from delta waterways to calm lagoons to riverine forests to open grasslands.

Xakanaxa is one of the few Botswana lodges that can offer year-round game drives. The birdwatching is particularly spectacular, especially during spring and summer when the migrants breed. Huge numbers of breeding storks and herons are attracted to the world-famous heronries which lie to the north of the lodge. Game viewing by mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) provides a unique perspective, as does a powerboat exploration of the Okavango.

The camp’s main buildings are constructed on raised platforms maximizing the views over the surrounding lagoons and islands. Local timber, reed, and thatch encompass an elegant lounge with a small but comprehensive library, a dining room, an expansive sundeck, a plunge pool, and a sala with daybed. A fire-deck is set under giant Jackalberry trees. The camp operates on generator power but at night all lighting is supplied by battery powered lamps, candles, and paraffin lanterns, creating the feel of an authentic African safari. Dining experiences include “traditional safari fare served with a pan-African touch,” generally enjoyed at the main dining room table and accompanied by South African wines.
