Deception Valley Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Located next to the north-eastern border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Deception Valley Lodge offers unique opportunities to interact with San Bushmen.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of eight luxurious suites set on raised wooden platforms. Each suite includes either two twin beds or one large double bed dressed in crisp white linens and a separate cozy lounge area. The en suite bathrooms feature outdoor showers and romantic Victorian baths. A private deck is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beauties of the Kalahari. Other amenities include a fan, tea and coffee facilities, and a mini-bar.

The lodge is situated close to the world-famous Kalahari Game Reserve within a private 37,000-acre reserve. The Central Kalahari encompasses 20,400-square miles and is the second largest game reserve in the world. Not truly a desert, the summer rains cause the semi-arid Kalahari to explode with life. In fact, the savanna grows a covering of lush grasses and wildflowers, and herds of grazing mammals descend into the basin to feed. This area is home to the legendary black-maned Kalahari lion, the lively honey badger, and vast herds of antelope, as well as some of the highest concentrations of cheetah in Africa. During the rainy season from November to March, the area is a bird watcher’s paradise with over 250 species. The summer rains also bring wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, kudu, warthog and giraffe accompanied by a host of predators.

Daily game drives are conducted with expert guides in 4×4 vehicles, and there are even night drives to discover the nocturnal activities of many animals. But the lodge provides an even more unique experience by letting San bushmen lead nature walks as they teach visitors how to track animals and other survival tips. As the first inhabitant of this part of Africa dating back to 200,000 years ago, they are the prime experts on the Kalahari and how to adapt to its arid conditions. They instruct on what plant are poisonous and what is used a medicine, how to make a bow and arrow, how to build a fire, and how to find water the traditional way.

Each suite is connected to the main area by wooden walkways. The main lodge houses a dining room, lounge, and bar area decorated in warm Kalahari colors which make use of Bushmen and other African artifacts. A viewing deck overlooks a busy waterhole. There is also a curio shop, a small library, and refreshing pool. At night, dinner is served outside at the boma under a canopy of stars.
