Xigera Safari Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Surrounded by deep channels and lush vegetation, Xigera Safari Lodge offers an exclusive luxury experience in the heart of the Okavango Delta.

Accommodations at the camp consist of twelve luxury suites. Built on raised wooden platforms, the rooms have been carefully situated to offer superb views of the endless floodplains and its wildlife. Each tented suite is air-conditioned and has en-suite bathroom facilities, featuring a romantic bathtub and unique outside shower. One of the suites is a family unit, composed of two bedrooms each with its own en-suite bathroom. All rooms have private decking and an outdoor gazebo, perfect for relaxing and even game-viewing!

Quietly surprising touches are everywhere. Perhaps the most remarkable is the three-story baobab sculpture that offers the chance “sleep out” beneath the velvet African sky.

Xigera, pronounced “keejera,” is located in the Moremi Game Reserve within the world-famous Okavango Delta. For much of the year, the area epitomizes the splendid uniqueness of this inland river delta, with palm-filled islands, riverine forests, a multitude of clear water channels, and expansive floodplains. Rare sitatunga antelope can be seen here as well as lions, leopards, buffalo, and hyenas as they wade through the water and island hop in search of food. And, of course, hippos and crocodiles love the waterways.

Xigera is a true hybrid camp, meaning that it has both land- and water-based activities. During the annual flood, boats whisk guests across the channels to islands where 4×4 vehicles are waiting. But Xigera is most renowned for its water experiences, including both mokoro and motorboats. Mokoro is a traditional dug-out canoe steered by a long pole … like an African gondola ride. Silently and slowly gliding along hidden water channels in this way is an experience unique to the delta. Motorboats are a great way to go further afield (or a-sea?) and explore the deeper water channels. Whether by mokoro or motorboat, this is an ideal way to see the delta’s prolific birdlife including Pel’s fishing-owl, African skimmer, slaty egret, wattled crane, and colorful kingfishers. Catch and release fishing lets anglers try out their skills and hook several species of tilapia or even the famed tigerfish.

The main area of camp is also built on raised platforms and houses the lounge, bar, library, star deck, and dining room which overlook the permanently flowing channel. The lodge’s refreshing swimming pool is the perfect spot to cool off during a warm afternoon, while the traditional boma firepit invites guests to gather around with an after-dinner drink to relax and swap stories under a clear, starlit sky.
