Camp Okavango

PLAN MY TRIP

Nestled on the remote Nxaragha Island in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Camp Okavango offers superlative access to the permanently flooded interior of this natural wonder.

Accommodation at the camp consists of eleven East African-style safari tents and one family tent providing elegant comfort. Each room is built on a raised teak platform and comes with a private viewing deck accessed by stacking siding doors and with excellent views of the delta. The tents also come with an en suite bathroom with double vanities, double shower, and a separate toilet. Other amenities include ceiling fans, dressing gowns, hair dryers, umbrellas, in-room safes, flashlights, and tea/coffee facilities.

The camp is situated on the remote Nxaragha Island within the world-famous Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This stunning natural wonder is the world’s largest inland delta, and comprises a maze of deep lagoons, large lakes, and hidden, meandering channels. Known as “the jewel of the Kalahari” the Okavango’s lagoons, lakes, and deep channels form an oasis amid the arid Kalahari Desert. It is no wonder its fresh waters attract an unmatched diversity and concentration of wildlife and wildfowl. The delta is an important natural habitat with 2,500 species of plants, 65 fish species, 20 large herbivores and their attendant predators, and more than 450 species of birds.

Due to its unique locale, Camp Okavango offers fantastic water-based game drives. Experienced professional guides navigate motorboats or traditional mokoros (dug-out canoes) across shallow floodplains blanketed with lily pads, deep reed-lined lagoons, and the maze of forested water channels. In this environment, fishing and bird watching are highlights. Additionally, on many of the nearby islands guests may also venture out on guided bush walks in search of the delta’s land-based mammals. For those seeking some fishing opportunities, anglers may test their skill against bream and tiger fish.

Camp Okavango’s main area encompasses of a network of interconnected walkways linking up two lounge areas, a dining room, library, self-service bar and curio shop. The main lodge is constructed of traditional thatch and lethaka (reed). The dining room leads onto a spacious open-air patio, which is perfect for brunch, afternoon tea, and tranquil evenings around the fire. The lovely, thatched sundeck and refreshing rim-flow pool are the perfect place to relax away the warm afternoon hours. An eco-sensitive lodge, it tries to minimize its effect on the land with its raised platforms and open-design.
