Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Set beneath a cool forest canopy of wild palms and gnarled fig trees, Sandibe Okavango Lodge boasts outstanding wildlife viewing and warm hospitality.

Accommodation at Sandibe consist of twelve air-conditioned suites that sit on raised decks above the papyrus-lined waters. The suites include comfortable beds with unusual copper-colored mosquito nets and an en suite bathroom with double copper basins, flush toilet, and an al fresco outside shower. All the cottages face the water and are shaded by the tall tree canopy, where guests can admire the views and the wildlife from the privacy of their own refreshing plunge pool.

Sandibe Safari Lodge is situated on a private concession next to a permanent channel of the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The camp has exclusive traversing rights to over 55, 600 acres of wildlife land adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve. The wildlife in the area around Sandibe is quite good, with red lechwe, impala, tsessebe, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and resident herds of buffalo and elephant. The dominant predators are lion and leopard, but cheetah and hyena are seen here too. Sandibe Safari Lodge has the dubious privilege of a “resident” elephant who often likes to hog the paths and appear at the swimming pool.

Daily and nightly game drives led by experienced tracker-guides are the primary activity at Sandibe. Bush walks in the delta are an excellent way to connect with the bush in a more intimate way. While mokoro rides in a traditional dug-out canoe are perhaps the quintessential delta activity. There are also “silent” motor boat tours too. Birdwatching is excellent and numerous water birds, including ducks, geese, and teals, are common, while more unusual species include long-winged falcons, slaty egrets, black coucals, black egrets, and brown fire finches.

Sandibe’s two-story main lounge and dining area is a soaring, open structure. The ground floor hosts an appealing lounge area with a fridge stocked with cool beverages. The covered dining area is attractive, but when the weather is good meals are often taken outside next to the open fire. During the rainy season, dinner is often served in the privacy of the cottage. An excellent wine cellar offers the standard wines but also has a good selection of premium wines and champagne. On the upper level are more comfy chairs, and the views are excellent. A splash pool is a set just apart from the main area, but sun-loungers and shady trees make it a prime spot for relaxation.
