Khwai Leadwood

PLAN MY TRIP

Built on the banks of the Khwai River and nestled amongst a forest of sycamore and leadwood trees, Khwai Leadwood provides a quiet and intimate luxury safari camp experience.

Accommodation at the camp consists of five standard luxury tented rooms, one tented family unit, and one tented honeymoon suite. Each of these spacious rooms has a private en-suite bathroom with gorgeous views over the water. The natural tones of the raised wooden floors and the woven baskets bring in the rugged landscape with contemporary style. Guests can take in the panoramic views from their private veranda that overlooks the famed Moremi Game Reserve, one of the richest game viewing areas in Botswana.

Khwai Leadwood has found a home on a permanent site on Tsaro Concession in the Khwai Community Area. The camp is located on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta in a community-run concession which supports the local Khwai community with proceeds generated by tourism within the area. The lagoon which stretches out in front of the camp flows into the Khwai River, providing a natural border to the community area from the adjacent Northern Moremi Game Reserve.

The Khwai River attracts an abundance of wildlife and supports the complex delta ecosystem. The river is home to a wide variety of unique and colorful bird species as well as iconic African animals.

Diverse wildlife, including elephant, buffalo, zebra, lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog, can be observed during daytime game drives. Night drives are an excellent opportunity to see some of the more shy, nocturnal animals. For a more immersive, personal experience, guests can take a guided nature walk and explore the local leadwood and mopane woodlands and adjacent grasslands on foot. The camp takes advantage of its river location by offering mokoro safaris on the water. Based on the design of traditional canoes, these fiberglass replicas provide an up close and intimate view of the river and its wildlife. Sundowners, bush lunches, and bush dinners are also available. Cultural tours of nearby villages are a terrific chance to gain a deeper understanding of the country and its people.
