Muchenje Safari Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Muchenje Safari Lodge is west of Chobe National Park, forty minutes from Kasane and two hours by road from Victoria Falls.

Accommodations at the camp consist of eleven private thatched cottages with stunning views of the Chobe and Caprivi floodplains. All the rooms have twin beds that can be converted to doubles and feature an en suite bathroom with a large walk-in shower, double vanities, and a toilet. There is one family unit which houses up to four people and is comprised of a bedroom with two bathrooms downstairs and an open plan loft area with two single beds upstairs. Each cottage has a private veranda, the perfect spot to relax and watch animals coming for a drink at the river.

The camp is located on an escarpment within the Chobe Forest Reserve. Chobe’s incredible wildlife diversity and concentrations will surprise and delight even the most experienced safari-goers. The park is home to four of Africa’s “Big 5”, but it is known the world over for its elephant and buffalo herds. Expect to find lion, leopard, wild dogs, many grazers, and an astonishing array of bird species. Chobe National Park includes vast landscapes, open plains, baobab trees, and ancient woodlands. The elephant population, estimated to exceed 45,000, is the largest single concentration surviving in Africa.

Activities at Muchenje center around morning and afternoon game drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles. Night drives track nocturnal animals such as hyena and leopards. Walking safaris take in the smaller details and allow for a more careful look at the area’s flora and fauna. Taking advantage of its waterways, the lodge also offers river cruises where guests can drift silently past bathing herds of elephant and enter the world of river creatures such as hippo and crocodile. Birdwatching is particularly spectacular on the river. There are also cultural visits available to local villages.

Muchenje’s main lodge building overlooks the Chobe River and its floodplains. It features a dining area, bar, reception, curio shop, game viewing platform, and library. The swimming pool is built among natural rock formations and offers spectacular views, making it a great place in which to relax during the heat of the day. Meals at Muchenje are served table d’ bush and are wholesome and plentiful. Guests dine together on a long railway sleeper dining table. Vegetarian and other special meal requests are accommodated. Being owner run, Muchenje Safari Lodge allows for a more personalized service and homely atmosphere.
