Little Machaba

PLAN MY TRIP

Nestled in the game-rich Khwai area, Little Machaba Camp affords guests the intimacy and exclusive comfort of a classic safari camp experience.

An eight-bed camp, Little Machaba consists of four tents: two luxury tents and two luxury family tents. These classic canvas tents decorated in earth tones with comfortable double beds and crisp, white linens sit on raised wooden decks and overlook the flood plain views. These en suite tents have hot and cold running water, flush toilets, his and her basins, and indoor showers. Three of the tents have outdoor showers while the honeymoon tent goes a step further with an outdoor bathtub for all the romance of bathing in the wild. Each tent has its own lounging area. The tents are connected to the main area of the camp by wooden walkways that meander through the riverine trees.

Little Machaba is located on the same island as Machaba Main Camp, but is run independently of the main camp. It is situated in the Khwai Concession, a 445, 000-acre reserve situated in the north eastern Okavango adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve. The wildlife in the Khwai region is incredible, with large populations of leopard and wild dog. The area is made up of sweeping grasslands, riparian forests and floodplains. The local community runs eco-tourism initiatives here to preserve the integrity and natural beauty of the area.

The camp offers plenty of activities. Game drives are held in the mornings and afternoon/evenings. Lasting about three hours each, they are conducted along the river systems and flood plains around the camp. The camp has night drives for a chance to see the smaller more nocturnal animals. Leisurely walking safaris are also offered generally in the morning with armed guides and provide a chance to see smaller animals in the bush that might be missed from a vehicle. The camp also has a Mekoro safari in a dugout canoe poled by an experienced poler in the shallower waters of the Okavango for views of life on the river.

The main area at Little Machaba comprises a tented bar and dining area built on raised wooden platforms with stunning views across the river into Moremi Game Reserve. Dining takes place outside either under the shade or under the stars. Botswanan chefs cook up a mixture of local flavors and home-cooked cuisines, what they call bush fare. Outside, there’s a large sandy area, home to the communal campfire ringed by comfy camp chairs for guests to lounge and swap stories at the end of the day. There is also a library, an on-site spa therapist and a refreshing swimming pool with sun loungers. Wi-Fi is available in the main area.
