Thornybush River Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Overlooking the Monwana River, Thornybush River Lodge is an intimate and elegant safari lodge located in the game-rich Thornybush Private Reserve adjacent to Kruger National Park.

Luxury accommodations at the lodge consist of only four thatched-roof suites including the magnificent two-bedroom Royal Suite. Each spacious suite embodies an African-chic style and feature comfy beds romantically draped in mosquito netting and a cozy lounge. The beautiful en suite bathrooms come with floor to ceiling glass doors opening up the space to the outside as guests unwind in a deep soaking bath or use the marvelous outdoor shower. In addition, every suite enjoys a private elevated deck with a refreshing plunge pool and panoramic views of the bush. Additional amenities include a bar fridge freezer, coffee station, and air-conditioning.

The lodge is situated in Thornybush Nature Reserve and is adjacent to world-famous Kruger National Park set against the majestic backdrop of the Northern Drakensberg Mountains. Stretching across nearly 25,000 acres of land, Thornybush Game Reserve is located in the eastern Lowveld area. The reserve is home to the Big Five as well as giraffes, antelope, and cheetahs. A favorite spot for many wildlife documentaries, it is home to the first recorded white wildebeest born in the wild. Moreover, the reserve is also one of the first to start rhino-horn treatments to deter poachers.

There are plenty of exciting activities available to choose from. Morning and late afternoon/evening game drives are led by expert rangers and trackers in open land cruisers. Guided bush walks led by an armed ranger allow guests a better chance to see some of the smaller creatures of the bush as well as an opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region, and to have a chance to follow tracks in more detail. Hot air balloon excursions feature a one-hour long flight over the scenic, lowveld section of the Blyde River. A great cultural tour, the lodge furnishes trips to the HLOKOMELA community project encompassing local initiatives to provide services to the local communities.

The main lodge area is beautifully furnished and houses a luxurious lounge and a dining area with an open kitchen allowing guests to watch the chef prepare delectable meals. During the heat of the afternoon, the sparkling rim flow pool provides a cool respite as well as a view of the busy waterhole below.
