Birkenhead House

PLAN MY TRIP

Perched on a cliff overlooking Walker Bay, Birkenhead House continues this picturesque property’s tradition of fine hotels.

Formerly the site of the Birkenhead Hotel, Birkenhead House is a contemporary, luxury beach house that exudes a laid back feel while providing luxury accommodation and fine cuisine. The house’s eleven double suites are exquisitely furnished and feature magnificent views of either Walker Bay or the nearby Kleinriver mountain range. Each suite offers en-suite bathroom, air-conditioning, digital TV, DVD player, Wi-Fi connection, and a complimentary mini-bar. From zebra-print upholstery and bold original artwork to one-of-a-kind antiques, the eclectic style of each suite surprises and delights guests.

The hotel is located in the charming seaside town of Hermanus. It is the perfect beach house positioned on the edge of a cliff overlooking the beaches and the wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Hermanus is well-known as the best place to view whales in South Africa. But it is also renowned for its artisanal food and its proximity to the Hemel-en-Aarde wine route. Once an old fishing town originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, the name was shortened to for the sake of the postal service. Today, it is a bustling tourist destination full of quaint boutiques, markets, and galleries. The nearby Fernkloof Nature Reserve has 1,100 different plant species that have been collected and identified making it one of the six floral kingdoms of the world.

There are many activities to take advantage of from hiking the surrounding mountain trails, boating around Dyer Island, studying the indigenous birdlife, fishing in the ocean, quad-biking, horseback riding, sea-kayaking, and scuba diving. For those desiring a more leisurely vacation, they can explore the charming village and local wineries. Yoga, a leisurely bike ride, or simply relaxing on the beach allow guests to take time to recharge. From May to December, whale-watching is the highlight of a stay at Birkenhead House. In August, the southern right and humpback whales descend upon Walker Bay for the birthing season. Amazingly, calves only a couple of hours old can be seen swimming alongside their mothers. The more adventurous can go cage-diving with great white sharks for a secured close encounter.

The on-site spa offers a range of relaxing treatments including massages, aromatherapy, and reflexology in two convenient treatment rooms. A fully equipped gym, dual-level pool, beach access, and fine dining restaurant all contribute to the luxury and sense of restful calm at Birkenhead House. With an easy blend of modern South Africa cuisine, Cape seafood, traditional French techniques, and strong Asian and Italian influences, the exotic dining experience at the hotel will please any palate.
