Grootbos Garden Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Overlooking Walker Bay which is renowned as a whale nursery, the romantic Grootbos Garden Lodge lies between the towns of Stanford and Gansbaai on the Cape’s southern coast.

Grootbos Garden Lodge has six one-bedroom Luxury suites, two two-bedroom Luxury suites, and three one-bedroom Classic suites. The perfect place to unwind and restore the spirit, each suite has a spacious bedroom with a romantic canopy bed and an en suite bathroom featuring a double vanity, double shower and/or bath. There is a separate, cozy lounge with tea and coffee making facilities, a romantic fireplace, mini-bar, T.V. and DVD player, as well as an additional bathroom. In addition to which, each suite has a relaxing private deck overlooking Walker Bay with an outdoor shower. Other amenities include air conditioning, fresh fruit basket daily, under the floor heating, and Wi-Fi.

The lodge is nestled in an ancient Milkwood forest surrounded by rolling hills of fynbos and majestic mountains within the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. The reserve comprises 6,177-acres and is a hidden gem in South Africa’s premier marine and floral destination. The Reserve is only two hours away from Cape Town and one hour away from where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic at the end of a continent. The unique fynbos kingdom and ancient forest of Grootbos features 791 plant species, 118 bird species, 29 mammals, and 21 amphibians, some of which are under threat of extinction.

Activities at Grootbos are spectacular and unique, including boat-based whale watching. The native marine life includes southern right whales and the other four members of the Cape’s “big 5”: dolphin, African penguin, Cape fur seal, and great white shark. The more daring may even go cage diving with the sharks. Due to the region’s remarkable and unique flora, a flower safari explores some of the 750 fynbos here and even offers the chance to see endangered blue crane. For the avid beachgoers, there are nine miles of pristine coastline. Additionally, Grootbos Nature Reserve has sixteen well-trained horses on which even the novice will be comfortable. There are a number of excellent wine estates in the region for a chance at wine tasting some of South Africa’s best vintages.

The lodge is constructed of stone, thatch, and timber. Its gardens celebrate the indigenous bush. The Garden Restaurant enjoys its own glorious views over the ocean toward the setting sun. The emphasis is on fresh local ingredients including freshly caught fish, succulent meats, and local produce, all paired with delicious South African wines. In addition, Grootbos Garden Lodge offers a laundry service, beauty salon, library, internet access, and an entertainment room. The large deck and swimming pool provide excellent opportunities to relax and take in the views.
