Melton Manor

PLAN MY TRIP

Melton Manor on the Kwandwe Game Reserve is a frontier farmhouse with modern touches.

A sole-use safari villa, it is perfect for families or a group of friends that wish to have a villa to themselves. But it also allows per-room reservations. Four en-suite double bedrooms accommodate a total of eight guests and are spread around a U-shaped courtyard with a private swimming pool. The spacious bathrooms has large windows looking onto the bush and feature deep soaking tubs and large showers. The interiors are a stylish meld of collectable South African settler furniture and stylish contemporary pieces. The quirky decor combines familiar objects with unfamiliar uses. High ceilings and expansive verandas create a sense of space, while deep couches, cozy fireplaces, and a welcoming, lived-in look make guests feel perfectly at home.

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve encompasses five distinct habitats that are home to an incredible variety of wildlife. The reserve accommodates lion, hyena, leopard, white rhino, and well over 200 bird species. Springbok are most abundant, but strong populations of greater kudu, oryx, red hartebeest, and eland are also found, with bushbuck and Cape grysbok in the dense thickets. Kwandwe has some of the most magnificent cheetah sightings in Africa and is also home to the endangered black rhino. Other possible sightings include the nocturnal aardwolf, aardvark, and bat-eared fox, while black-backed jackal, Cape fox, and caracal are common smaller predators. Kwandwe is the Xhosa word for “place of the blue crane,” and is a haven for a large flock of these highly endangered birds.

Activities at Melton Manor center around the wildlife. Morning game drives start bright and early after tea, and guests set out in an open 4×4 safari vehicles with a ranger and tracker team. Evening game drives are not to be missed since they are generally not available in public game reserves. Beginning in the late afternoon and lasting until after dark, night drives are the perfect way to observe nocturnal animals including porcupine, aardwolf, and aardvark. As the sun sets, sundowners are set up in a scenic location. There are also expertly-led walking safaris in search of Africa’s “small five” and a more intimate look at the bush.

The Manor houses a variety of private spaces and open plan areas for guests young and old to relax and gather in when not out exploring the reserve. A relaxing afternoon can be spent in the library with a good book or having some fun with the large collection of board games. Inviting lounge areas include cozy fireplaces and are perfect for an evening curled up with a glass of wine. The interactive farmhouse kitchen is abuzz with chefs cooking up delicious, wholesome dishes with Eastern Cape flair.
