River Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Facing due east to catch the rising sun over world-famous Kruger National Park, River Lodge offer safari luxury and African hospitality at its best.

Lion Sands River Lodge’s twenty thatched rooms overlook the unfenced bush and pristine riverbanks of Lion Sands Game Reserve. There are twelve luxury rooms with a large soaking tub and indoor shower, plus a lounge area with mini bar and wooden deck. The six superior luxury rooms are larger in size and have ample open-plan bathrooms and outdoor showers, with four of the six suites being inter-connected and ideal for families. For added privacy, the two river suites are located farther from the guest areas and have large decks and outdoor showers. Other amenities include air-conditioning, fans, mosquito nets, in-room safe, and personal mini-bar.

River Lodge is situated in family-owned Lion Sands Game Reserve and is managed by the fourth generation More Family. The Lion Sands Game Reserve is the only private concession to be a part of Sabi Sands Private Reserve and Kruger National Park. The area boasts more large mammal species than any other African game reserve, over 450 species of birds, and a vast range of reptiles, insects, and smaller game. The concession is also home to a large population of the endangered black rhino and is the nesting site of the rare southern ground hornbill and saddle billed stork. The river itself is home to crocodiles and hippos and a virtual bird-watching heaven with an overabundance of bird life including some rare species.

Game drives are conducted twice a day in off-road vehicles that can follow the animals through rough terrain. For a more intimate adventure, guided walking safaris take guests back to the life of the original pioneers and hunters traversing the wilds up close. Bird watching, astronomy, bush breakfasts, bush dinners, river walks, hippo tours, safari lunches, and wildlife lectures are also available. For a cultural tour, the lodge provides the wonderful opportunity to visit the Henna Pre-School within the Huntington community, and to see first-hand the work that More Community Trust does to help the local population. Fulfill a lifelong dream of sleeping under the stars safely and in blissful comfort while nocturnal animals roam below either Kingston or Chalkley Treehouse.

River Lodge has been called the soul of Lion Sands and stands on a site with trees dating back 800 years. An all-inclusive property, the rates include all meals, premium brand beers, spirits, cellar wines, & champagnes as well as all soft drinks, laundry, and free Wi-Fi in guest areas. Most meals are served outside with dinners under the stars and prepared by expert chefs using fresh, seasonal ingredients. The main area of the lodge has a private lounge and bar with fireplace, an outdoor safari lounge, 2 swimming pools which are heated in winter, wooden viewing decks, a secluded bird hide, a river deck, a conference room, Africology health Spa & gymnasium, curio shop & both an indoor and open-air boma dining area.
