Rocktail Beach Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Nestled in a lush dune forest in beautiful Maputaland, Rocktail Beach Camp is a tropical beach paradise and diver’s dream destination.

Accommodations at the camp consist of seventeen rooms set in the indigenous forest. Most of the rooms have ocean views. There are ten standard tents which include five twin-bedded tents, four double-bedded tents, and one double bedded honeymoon suite. There are seven family tents with two adjoining bedrooms featuring one with a double bed and another with two three-quarter beds for up to two adults and two children. The bedrooms share a bathroom. Each room comes with an en suite bathroom with an open-feel indoor shower. The romantic honeymoon tent has magnificent views of the ocean and dune forest.

Rocktail Beach Camp is placed in the lush Maputaland Coastal Forest which blankets ancient dunes and is situated at Manzengwenya in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, formerly known as the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park in the northern Kwa-Zulu Natal. While not a traditional game viewing area, there are red duiker and reedbuck around. Plus, birding is outstanding and includes a number of special coastal forest species. The reef systems are rich with soft and hard corals, and ample fish species such as butterfly fish and trigger fish, rockmover wrasse, various eels, sharks including the iconic whale shark and ragged-tooth, dolphins, and of course turtles.

A comfortable 20-minute walk leads to a utopia of almost twenty-five miles of pristine beaches along the warm Indian Ocean waters of a Marine Reserve and World Heritage Site. Apart from the wonderful walks guests can enjoy in the forests and along the spectacular beaches. The camp’s fully accredited dive center provides both scuba diving and snorkeling in this world-class marine reserve. Anglers will enjoy catch and release fishing. In addition to these activities, at certain times of the year whale-watching is possible as well as once-in-a-lifetime encounters with nesting turtles. Kid friendly activities include specially guided nature walks, sand boarding, snorkeling, arts and crafts, and baking. Cultural tours of local villages let guests learn about the rich Zulu and Tonga cultures and traditions.

The camp’s central area houses a dining room, bar, and lounge with a scenic wrap-around verandah. The large pool is the perfect spot to relax and cool off while still enjoying the views. There is also a curio shop for those special souvenirs and a playroom for the kids. Babysitting services are also available. For a little added relaxation, massage services can be arranged upon request.
