Great Fish River Lodge is located in the malaria-free Kwandwe Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa.
Accommodations at the lodge consist of nine luxury suites. Each suite enjoys floor to ceiling framed glass doors that fold back to reveal stunning views of the wilderness. The en suite bathroom features a relaxing bath, both an indoor and an outdoor shower, a separate toilet, and twin vanities. The rooms have air-conditioning and ceiling fans to keep comfortable during the heat of the day. Moreover, each suite has its own spacious, thatched veranda and private plunge pool.
Kwandwe means “place of the blue crane” in the local Xhosa language. The lodge is situated right on the green banks of the Great Fish River in the 54,000-acre private Kwandwe Game Reserve. Along this stretch of the Great Fish River in 1820, there was a famous battle between settlers and the indigenous black population. Some of the wildlife living here includes kudu, grysbok, and caracal as well as the Big Five: lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and elephant. In addition, Kwandwe has some of the most magnificent cheetah sightings in Africa. A bird watcher’s paradise, the fish eagle and endangered blue crane are just some of the birds found on the Reserve.
