Tswalu Motse

PLAN MY TRIP

Lying at the foot of the Korannaberg mountains and overlooking the grassy plains of the famous Kalahari Desert, Tswalu’s The Motse is a safari-chic lodge.

Motse means village in the native Tswana language and the nine spacious legae meaning little house are truly laid out like a village. There are six standard legae or suite and three family legae to choose from. Each standard suite has a spacious bedroom with an open fire, a luxurious en-suite bathroom with both an indoor and an outdoor shower, a separate dressing area, and a study area. A private sun deck overlooks a busy waterhole and is the ideal place to relax. The family legae consist of two separate en suite bedrooms connected by a living room which leads out onto a private terrace.

The Motse is located in the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve which now extends over nearly 400 square miles of the Kalahari after being restored to its natural habitat by owner Nicky Oppenheimer of the De Beers family. In truth, the Kalahari belies its desert name as it is more semi-arid grassland than true desert. Its diverse habitat supports over eighty mammals and nearly 250 bird species. Many species of antelope as well as buffalo and white rhino make their homes in the Reserve. Rarer mammals including the desert black rhino, roan, sable, Tsessebe, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, and of course the Kalahari lions live here. The Kalahari lions are bigger than their counterparts elsewhere in Africa and are famous for their beautiful manes.

Six 4×4 game viewing vehicles let by expert trackers have exclusive access to the reserve, ensuring maximum privacy. A morning bush walk with a knowledgeable guide takes a more intimate look at the flora and fauna. There are even night walks available now for a chance to spot such nocturnal animals as aardvark, aardwolf, porcupine, or brown hyena at even closer range. For a unique view of the desert, horseback safaris allow guests to explore the dunes and savannahs on well-mannered horses, which are suitable for all ages and all levels of experience. For the kids, a Junior Ranger program starts of by giving each child a backpack with guides and tools. They can make their own bow and arrow for archery, learn how to identify spoor, and track game on foot.

The main house includes relaxing lounges, elevated decks, and a dining room. Gourmet meals prepared by Chef Justin Pillay can be enjoyed anywhere from the poolside, a picnic in the bush, on a private deck, or in the traditional boma. The mezzanine library is equipped with satellite TV. While the award-winning spa uses plant-based oils to enhance their wide range of relaxing treatments.
