Marataba Mountain Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Perched on the side of a mountain with panoramic views into Waterfall Valley, Marataba Mountain Lodge is an elegantly furnished hiker’s paradise.

The lodge enjoys an off-the-grid ‘Scandi-Safari’ style perched lightly on the earth and fully powered by the sun’s energy, the architecture and furnishings blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings, as if they grew out of the hillside itself. Accommodations consist of five luxury suites for up to eight people. Each suite has a king-sized bed/ twin beds for a comfy night sleep after a long and challenging hike. The en suite bathrooms feature a rain dance shower with views down into the valley and a free-standing vanity. A private shaded deck is the perfect spot for lounging and admiring the landscape. Other amenities include a fireplace, mini viewing deck, fan, dressing gown, in-room safe, and hair dryer.

Marataba Mountain Lodge (formerly, Marataba Trails Lodge) occupies a remote spot within the spectacularly beautiful Marataba Reserve part of Marakele National Park. A land of contrasts, rich red-hued mountains stand over verdant plains, its stone age past can still be seen in Pinnacle Iron Age Ruins and Bushman’s Gorge. Rare plant species such as yellowwood and cedar trees, tree ferns and five-mile high cycads can be found here. Its home to big game animals as well as a large variety of birdlife including the largest colony of endangered cape vultures in the world. The trails hereabouts feauture some of the most beautiful scenery in Africa, a place to get away from it all.

While a variety of activities are available from the lodge, most people come for the exceptional hiking trails. Marataba Walking Trails offers the intrepid walker a standalone opportunity to walk in the wild. Trails vary by length and difficulty and range from trekking over the top of the Kransberg range, to traversing through gorges. The day begins with an early morning trail of about three to four hours with refreshments provided at a point of interest. Shorter trails are offered before departure. Guests can then sit down and rest their feet in the back of an open vehicle and watch the wildlife on either a morning or afternoon game drive. With only five vehicles allowed out on the reserve each day, chances of seeing more animals than people are great. Water safaris on Miss Mara are a great way to explore the river and catch sight of a hippo, elephant, kudu, warthogs, among many other animals gracing the riverbanks.

An all-inclusive property, rates include accommodation, all meals, teas/coffees, Inclusive drinks (all soft drinks and selection of beers, spirits & house wines), daily bush walks with FGASA qualified Field Guides, and bush walk. At Marataba Mountain Lodge, the focus is all about healthy living, and guests are treated to an interactive culinary experience with Marataba’s chef who specializes in fresh, organic and delicious meals prepared over an open fire. Evenings at the lodge are spent in good company around the fire in the boma, learning about bush cooking techniques, local customs, and legends. The lodge is also one of the few malaria free areas for hiking and game drives.
