Simbavati River Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Situated within the beautiful Timbavati Private Nature Reserve overlooking the Nhlaralumi River, Simbavati River Lodge is a family-friendly camp that provides an authentic safari experience.

Accommodations at the camp consist of eight luxury tents and three chalets. Furnished and decorated in elegant simplicity, each of the canvas tents comes with comfortable twin beds and features a beautiful en suite bathroom with either an inside shower and an outside bath, or an inside bath and an outside shower. The three family chalets each come with two separate bedrooms and share one bathroom with a shower and bath. One of the family chalets can accommodate five people, whilst the other two family chalets can accommodate four people. Every room enjoys a private deck with magnificent views of either the bush or the river.

The lodge is ideally situated within both the private Timbavati Nature Reserve and the greater Kruger National Park. The Nhlaralumi River is a beautiful waterway in the summer months when rain is plentiful, and a dry riverbed in the drier winter months. Located within both the Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces, the reserve was established in 1995 as a premier Eco-tourism destination. In 1992, the western boundary fence separating the Kruger National Park and the Timbavati was removed to create a 4.9-million-acre open natural ecosystem that would enhance and promote natural environment. It is also home to the famous and beautiful white lions.

There are several exciting activities offered at the lodge. Game drives occur in the early morning and evening when the animals are most active and are conducted by experienced field guides and Shangaan trackers in open 4X4 vehicles. Simbavati means the place where the lions come down from the stars in the local Shangaan language, so chances of seeing a lion are great. But since this is Big Five game country there are excellent opportunities to also see leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo as well as other species such as kudu, zebra, warthog, giraffe, monkey to name a few. Bird viewing is in the park is outstanding with over 360 recorded species including various eagles, vultures, kingfishers, woodpeckers, buzzards, herons, egrets, owls, weavers. For the perfect picture, photographic safaris take place in specialized photographic game drive vehicles and led by expert photographers who provide one on one instruction.

Shaded by age old Jackalberry and Leadwood trees, the main area includes a comfortable lounge area, an ideal spot for a book on one of the comfortable couches. Dinner which consists of a delicious blend of European and African cuisine is a festive event which is alternatively served around the campfire in the open-air boma or in the thatched dining area. The bar caters for alcoholic beverages and also includes a wide selection of fine South African wines. Guests can relax with a refreshing swim in the pool or indulge in a treatment at the spa. A curio spot is stocked with souvenirs. As a child-friendly lodge, kids have their own activity plan and books to choose from.
