MalaMala Sable Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Situated on the banks of the Sand River within the private MalaMala Game Reserve, the Sable Camp offers private luxury in the South African Lowveld.

Each of the camp’s five luxury suites is elegantly and uniquely appointed. The Lion’s Den Suite is perfect for families with its two en suite bedrooms separated by a large sitting room. Under a traditional thatched roof, the interior rooms are spacious and comfortable. The rooms feature en suite his and her bathrooms with both an indoor and outdoor shower as well as a bath. Spacious bedrooms come with large beds and elegant furnishings. But most remarkable is the private balcony affording unimpeded views of the surrounding bushveld. Other amenities include air-conditioning, heated towel rack, mini-bar, fans, bathrobes, heater, safe, television, fridge, and complementary Wi-Fi.

The camp is located on the private MalaMala Game Reserve which comprises 33,000-acres and is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. MalaMala shares a twelve-mile unfenced border with world-famous Kruger National Park. As the first commercial, private game reserve it’s the model for all others. The park is well-known for its frequent sightings of the Big Five game animals: lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and elephant as well as cheetah and cape hunting dog. MalaMala’s river front running north to south is the lifeblood of the reserve, especially in the dry winter months. So concentrated are Africa’s big game in this reserve that in 2009 there were only ten days where tourists did not record seeing all of Africa’s Big Five.

Daily game drives are conducted in the early morning and late afternoon in open 4×4 safari vehicles. The rangers are in constant radio communication with one another to keep each other informed about the location of wildlife. Night drives, with the aid of powerful spotlights, bring the bush to life at night. Bush walks led by an armed ranger provide a more intimate look at the flora and fauna as well as lessons on animal tracking. Of course, the big draw to MalaMala is the photographic safari. A dedicated photographic safari vehicle features three rows of two bucket seats, a sliding camera mount per row, bean bags for camera stability, under-seat lighting, and the expert knowledge of a photographic ranger.

The luxurious common area includes an air-conditioned library with satellite television, complimentary internet connectivity, and a DVD player. The bar is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while delicious meals are served in the well-appointed dining room. The large, wooden safari deck is the perfect place to observe the steady flow of animal life at the Sand River’s edge. The camp’s swimming pool is nestled in the flood plain below the camp. There is also a boutique and gym.
