Botswana

Okavango Channels & Plains

PLAN MY TRIP

Exploring the waterways of the world-famous Okavango Delta as well as the wildlife-rich savannahs, Okavango Channels and Plains offers a thrilling adventure and luxury mobile safari experience.

This exciting journey is offered twice during Botswana’s summer in late November through late December for a six night/seven day trip. Each departure requires a minimum of two people with a maximum of seven for an intimate party of travelers. The adventure begins and ends in Maun. It starts with an enthralling overland journey to the Santawani Concession and includes game drives to see the wildlife on the abundant plains of the south-eastern Okavango. A short flight over the scenic expanse of the region transports guests to the plentiful channels and waterways of the heart of the Delta and a Classic Wilderness Safaris camp.

Beginning in Maun and then heads to the Gomoti Tented Camp in the Santawani Concession. The journey passes through several small villages and areas of plentiful wildlife. Days one through three will be spent at the luxury tented camp with activities focus around day and night game drives and nature walks. After breakfast, the journey continues with a flight in a light aircraft to Xigera with fantastic aerial views of the Okavango below. Days four through seven will be spent at Xigera exploring the concession via boat, mokoro (a traditional canoe paddled with long poles), game drives, and nature walks. Animal sightings in the concession include the water-loving red lechwe, spotted-necked otter, elephant, and tsessebe along with the elusive sitatunga. Some of the predators living in the region are the leopard and spotted hyena.

While this journey will bring adventurers closer to nature, it does not mean they need to give up their creature comforts. The first three night will be spent in the Gomoti Tented Camp. Nestled under large acacia trees, the camp has comfortable canvas tents with twin beds, wooden framed wardrobes, bedside table with reading lamp, and en suite bathroom with a shower and flush toilet. The main area includes a thatched dining room where guests will enjoy freshly prepared meals as well as a cozy lounge. The last three nights are spent at Xigera Camp, pronounced Keejera which is nestled on the aptly named Paradise Island. The camp consists of luxury tents on raised platforms with en suite bathrooms featuring double sinks, flushing toilets, and outdoor showers, as well as a private viewing deck. There is also a comfy lounge, dining tent, bar and small plunge pool.

The rates include the accommodations, all meals, a reasonable amount of soft drinks, water, house wine and beer, as well as local spirits such as gin and Amarula, national park fees, all scheduled activities, internal chartered flights, and transfers. An environmentally friendly company who believes in giving back to the local community, they support several projects including using only solar power at the Xigera Camp as well as conservation projects that help protect species such as the African wild dog, elephant, lion, and roan antelope.
