Little Vumbura Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Along with its sister camp, Vumbura Plains Camp, Little Vumbura Camp is situated on an island in a private concession in the extreme north of Botswana’s Okavango Delta.

The six resident tents of Little Vumbura Camp provide an intimate and beautiful base from which to experience the wonders of the Delta. There are five standard tents with four twin bedded tents and one king size bedded tent. There is one family tent which houses four guests comprising two rooms and two bathrooms each with their own entrance as well as an inter-leading door. Constructed in the shade of the native trees, each room has en-suite bathroom facilities and an inviting sunken lounge. Shaded decks with comfortable chairs provide the perfect spot to relax and take in the beauty of the area as well as a pre-or post-dinner drink.

The camp is situated on a wooded island within the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The annually flooded grasslands surrounding Vumbura Plains are locally referred to as ‘melapo’ and present good seasonal viewing of elephant, giraffe, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, common waterbuck and reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe, and Cape buffalo. Predators living in the Delta include the African wild dog, several resident prides of lion, as well as leopard, cheetah, and African wildcat.

The permanent and deep channels that surround the camp lend themselves to water activities including mokoro tours in a traditional dug-out canoe steered by long poles and motor boat rides. Hippo and crocodile are common in the waterways. Traditional game drives in 4x4s and led by expert guides are also available to traverse the nearby savannas in search of big game animals such as lions, elephants, giraffes, and wildebeest. The wetlands combining with the drier grasslands are also home to an impressive variety of bird-life boasting around 500 species of birds including Pel’s fishing owl and African pygmy goose. Anglers can enjoy some catch and release fishing of 85 recorded species of fish including tigerfish, tilapia and catfish.

The main area of camp includes a plunge pool and reading area overlooking the floodplains. A star deck leads off over the water from the dining area and bar. Unique to this camp is its part in Wilderness Safari’s program for community participation that aims at involving the local population in their country’s tourism industry.
