Elephant Havens

PLAN MY TRIP

A heartwarming refuge for orphaned elephants, where nurturing and rehabilitation bring hope and healing

The Elephant Havens Wildlife Foundation was founded in 2017 as the first (and only) elephant sanctuary in Botswana. Debra Stevens and her husband Scott Jackson fell in love with Africa and its wildlife over the course of their many years visiting the continent from their home in Texas. After Debra’s encounter with an orphaned baby elephant in 2013, she became very interested in how to help raise orphaned baby elephants. A friend from Botswana contacted them about taking action, and in 2017 they founded the elephant sanctuary together to care for orphaned elephants.

Elephant Havens believes that education is key to preserving and protecting elephants and the environment. Community outreach programs educate local communities on elephant behavior and health, as well as habitat protection and other methods of conservation. They aim to reduce human-elephant conflict by isolating specific areas that have struggled with elephant interaction and building creative solutions. The sanctuary considers hand raising orphans as only the first step in the long process of species protection. The sanctuary raises elephants hoping to return them back into the wild and uses their stay as a means educate foreigners and locals alike.

The sanctuary is located on the edge of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, which is a naturally elephant-dense area of the country. No reservation is needed for its two hour-long public tours each day at 9am and 4pm. Extended tours require pre-booking but include the one-hour public visit plus a two-hour extension with handlers and elephants. Three-hour private tours are available during the day and come with a reservation of the entire sanctuary for a private group. This tour includes lunch or tea, depending on the time of the visit. For particularly enthusiastic guests, the sanctuary also has four guest tents that are available for the night. Experiences at the sanctuary include interacting with the elephants and handlers, watching the elephants forage and swim, and watching bottle feeding of the smallest orphans.

Elephant Havens requires a minimum donation for each of these experiences, but also offers guests the opportunity to symbolically foster a baby elephant. This opportunity helps provide for the baby elephant’s care during its stay at the orphanage.
