Canyon Roadhouse

PLAN MY TRIP

A bit of a cult classic landmark, Canyon Roadhouse is a quirky lodge that pays homage to classic car on the way to Fish River Canyon.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of twenty rooms overlooking a central courtyard. Each air-conditioned room features two twin beds, a desk, colorful portraits of classic cars, and tea and coffee facilities as well as an en suite bathroom. Two interconnected rooms can be requested for families. There are also triple rooms available. A family room comes with a spacious, open-plan bedroom with four beds and an en suite bathroom with a shower. There is even a wheelchair accessible twin room.

The lodge is located on the road to the Fish River Canyon, just eight miles from the gate to the viewing points. Fish River is the largest canyon in Africa. The massive ravine is in total about 100 miles long, up to sixteen miles wide, and in places almost 1,804 feet deep. The 403-mile long Fish River is the longest interior river in the nation. It flows intermittently with flooding usually occurring in late summer while the rest of the year it becomes a chain of long narrow pools. Unlike the Grand Canyon, Fish River Canyon was not carved out by the river but a result of a fracture in the earth’s crust that collapsed the valley bottom forming a broad valley about 500 million years ago. Animals are scarce in this harsh environment though there are Hartmann’s zebras, kudu, and klipspringer and sometimes leopard.

Fish River Canyon is renowned for its hikes. A three-mile guided hike leads to beautiful Gondwana Canyon Park with lesson on the local flora and fauna. A hiking trail takes visitors from Canyon Village up to a mountain plateau before looping back via Archway Rock. There is also sundowner walk for a cocktail and a view over the lodge’s own mountain. Or for those wishing to see the canyon without all the hiking there are three-hour canyon day drives with a stop for refreshments by the river. A guided drive takes in the beauties of Gondwana Canyon Park. The more adventurous can partake in a three to four-day Canyon Trail for an experience of a lifetime.

The extraordinary lodge resembles an old roadhouse with its large red-roof. While the grounds feature rusty old Chevys and Fords from a bygone era, adorned with corky quiver trees and desert flora. Inside the reception desk is an International truck. The bar and restaurant are built around the cabs of several cars which serve as zany fireplaces. The restaurant boast a delicious amarula cheesecake and the best cappuccino for miles. There is also a pool for escaping the afternoon heat.
