Erongo Wilderness Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Encircled by the Erongo Mountains, Erongo Wilderness Lodge is an idyllic retreat in a secluded valley.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of twelve luxury tented chalets. Each chalet sits high on its stilted legs with a Meru-style tent atop a wide wooden deck. There is a choice between Double Luxury Tents with one queen bed, Twin/Double Luxury Tents with two three-quarter beds, Family Tents with two adjoining tents that have two three-quarter beds in each room, and a Two-tented Suite that also comes with a private dining room and lounge. Every chalet comes with an en suite bathroom built around the existing rocks and trees. Outside, the private decks are fitted with a table and chairs so guests can relax and take in the awe-inspiring views.

The lodge is located in the Erongo Mountains. The Erongo Mountain Nature Conservancy comprises 494,000-acres of pristine wilderness area that straddles the Erongo Mountains, a natural reserve within a huge volcanic crater. The Erongo Mountains are bordered by the Namib Desert to the west and a mixed, woodland savannah to the east. Wildlife living in the area includes leopard, cheetah, giraffe, elephant, rhino, blesbok, waterbuck, impala, warthog, wildebeest, kudu, oryx, eland, mountain zebra, springbok, and steenbok. There are nearly 200 varieties of bird species recorded here like the yellow-billed hornbill, the colorful lilac breasted roller, and crimson bou bou.

The lodge offers nature drives to Paula’s Cave that traverse the beautiful wilderness. Once at the cave, an easy walk up the hill brings guests to the site of some outstanding bushman rock art. Then it’s time for a sundowner before driving back to the lodge by way of discovering nocturnal animals with a spotlight. Guided walks around the lodge property are the best way to take in the local flora and fauna. There is a walk for every level of fitness and curiosity. There are even several self-guided walking trails available for a stroll or an adventure on one’s own. With so many wonderful birds in the area, birdwatching is a great and rewarding pastime even from the deck of the chalets.

Raised wooden walkways and natural stone steps connect the chalets to the heart of the lodge. The main area houses a restaurant, lounge, swimming pool and sundowner deck. The open-plan lounge and restaurant overlook a floodlit waterhole and enjoy the cozy warmth radiating from the central fireplace in the winter. The restaurant serves up delicious and inventive meals as well as fresh baked breads and pastries.
