Okahirongo Elephant Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Rugged natural beauty surrounds this unique lodge in the Namibian desert

Each of the seven terra cotta suites overlooking the surrounding wilderness offers picturesque views of the rugged Purros valley, lush riverbed, and distant mountains. Dark African wood and rough natural surfaces echo the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Each room boasts a private lounge with a cozy daybed. A luxurious en-suite bathroom includes indoor and outdoor showers and an inviting bathtub with a view of the valley. The Presidential Suite is an expansive private villa with two luxury bedrooms featuring a scenic entrance, an extended lounge area with an external veranda and two gazebos, day beds, and cushions for a lazy afternoon or a night of stargazing.

Located in the Purros Conservancy just thirty-five miles from Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, the lodge can only be accessed via 4×4 vehicle or small aircraft. A nearby landing strip is only five minutes away. Also known as the Kaokoveld, this area is home to the nomadic Himba tribe as well as a variety of uniquely adapted wildlife. Desert elephant, lion, black rhino, and giraffe are frequently sighted. Other wildlife species flourish in the Purros Valley, including gemsbok, springbok, and ostrich.

An open safari vehicle provides the best game viewing opportunities, and experienced guides take guests through a variety of untouched wilderness areas to explore the diverse plant and animal life that thrive in these unique desert conditions. Special game drives track free-roaming desert elephants that have uniquely adapted to the dry and rugged environment. Morning and afternoon game drives, night drives, morning walks, sundowners, and breakfasts in the wilderness are some available adventures. Cultural visits to a nearby Himba village allow guests to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Namibia’s last traditionally existing tribal group

With the beauty of the desert all around, the lodge provides ample opportunities to take in the views from the open-air lounges, the library, and the refreshing pool. Excellent meals, a unique blend of Italian and Namibian cuisine, are served by candlelight in the dining room or around the open fire. Fresh local ingredients and excellent South African wines complement the dynamic daily menu. To wind down after a few days of safari, massage and spa treatments are available.
