Perched on the edge of the Etendeka Plateau, Grootberg Lodge overlooks the beautiful Klip River Valley.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of fourteen twin chalets and two family chalets constructed from rock and thatch. The family chalets can house up to five people and come with two bedrooms, a sitting room, and a shared bathroom. Each room includes an en suite bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet. Other amenities include a writing desk, bedside lamps, and coffee and tea facilities. However, the best feature of each chalet is its private deck where guests may relax and watch black eagles soar over the picturesque Klip River Valley as they hunt for food.

Grootberg Lodge is located in Damaraland in northwestern Namibia, about fifty miles from Kamanjab and fifteen miles from Palmwag. It sits in a private concession on land set aside by the Khoadi/Hoas community. It is unique in that it is the first middle-market establishment in the Namibia tourism industry 100% owned by the community. Set within the stunning Etendeka Mountains, it’s the perfect place to view black eagle nesting sites. The Klip River Valley’s permanent springs provide water for the local population of zebra, antelope, and occasionally elephant, lion, and black rhino. Even the skittish klipspringer is sometimes seen leaping about on the steep cliffs.

The lodge offers plenty of exciting activities. Elephant tracking led by expert guides follows the herds in one of the last places where wildlife roam free. Equally popular, rhino tracking begins with a ride in 4×4 vehicles down to the Klip River before striking out on foot in pursuit of the rhino. Scenic rides take in the beauties and animals of the Etendeka Plateau for a chance to see zebras, antelope, jackal, springbok, kudu, and oryx. Cultural tours visit the local farms and homesteads of the Damara people for an opportunity to learn about their traditions and how they have adapted to living in harsh desert conditions. There is also a tour of the Erwee Primary School with a performance by the pupils and lunch under the shade of the trees.

The lodge provides a taste of the local hospitality as the staff are hired from the local community. The main lodge houses a dining area, lounge, and bar. The dining room has a cozy fire place for cold evenings during the winter months. When the weather is nice, meals can also be enjoyed on the shaded outside veranda.
