Kwessi Dunes

PLAN MY TRIP

Set within the undulating red dunes of the private NamibRand Nature Reserve, quirky and comfy Kwessi Dunes offers an escape from the ordinary safari lodge.

Accommodations at Kwessi Dunes consist of ten air-conditioned round chalets. Each canvas and thatch chalet is furnished with a large, vintage four-poster bed. For those who wish to fall asleep under a blanket of stars, each chalet has a separate star-gazer room with an open roof. The en-suite bathroom features both an indoor and outdoor shower. Plus, there is a shaded veranda with seats and a hammock to relax in while taking in the distinctive beauty of the NamibRand.

The lodge is only one of a small number of lodges in the vast NamibRand Nature Reserve. Covering an area of nearly 500,000 acres close to Sossusvlei, the NamibRand is bordered by the Namib-Naukluft National Park in the west and the impressive Nubib Mountain range in the east. The main draw of the reserve is the diversity of desert landscapes. Virtually all facets of the Namib are represented here. Mountains plunging down into endless grassy plains are interspersed by red vegetated dunes, and this creates a living tapestry of ever-changing colors and shapes that provide a visual feast for artists and photographers. Game species found in the reserve include gemsbok, mountain and plains zebra, springbok, red hartebeest, bat-eared fox, spotted hyena, Cape fox, and African wildcats. The rockier areas are inhabited by kudu, klipspringer, baboon, and leopard.

Kwessi Dunes breaks away from traditional game drives and lets guests explore the region via other means, such as on horseback. The rolling red dunes are also the ideal playground for a quad biking trip. The lodge’s nature walks provide an intimate examination of the NamibRand’s unique flora and fauna as well as an opportunity to capture the perfect Instagram-worthy snapshot of fairy circles, the amethyst mountains, and the unmarred beauty of the immense expanse of desert landscape. For an aerial view, guests can book a hot air balloon flight.

The main lodge boasts a large array of windows and glass doors for gazing out at the red sands and ethereal mountains via the comfort of an air-conditioned room. The lodge houses a library, several dining and lounge spaces, and a well-stocked bar. There is also a communal outdoor campfire for warming up in the morning and evening and a refreshing swimming pool for cooling off in the afternoon. Thanks to its lack of light pollution, the NamibRand is Africa’s first designated International Night Sky Reserve, and guests can gaze at more stars than they ever knew existed.
