Namibia

Wolwedans Dune Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Set on the edge of high sand dune, Dune Camp by Wolwedans is a stylish yet down to earth safari camp in the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

Preferred by younger and more adventurous travelers, accommodations at the camp consist of six canvas tents built on raised wooden platforms. Each spacious en-suite tent has a small dressing table and a decorative four-poster bed dressed in crisp white linens with warm down duvets for the cold nights and a protective draping of mosquito nets. The large bathrooms feature solar-heated showers and flush toilets. While the generous wooden decks let guests sleep under the stars with the comforts of home just inside the tent. The decks also provide the perfect spot to kick back and take in the beauty of the vast desert.

The camp is positioned on the edge of 820-foot-high dune in the NamibRand. Covering an area of some 494,210 acres close to Sossusvlei, the NamibRand Reserve is bordered by the Naukluft Park in the west and the impressive Nubib Mountain range in the east. The special attraction of the reserve is the diversity of desert landscapes. Virtually all facets of the Namib are represented here. Mountains plunging down into endless grassy plains are interspersed by red vegetated dunes create a living tapestry of ever-changing colors and shapes that provide a visual feast for artists and photographers.

The southern regions of the NamibRand Nature Reserve are easily accessible from Boulders Camp, and experienced guides conduct on scenic game drives and walking safaris along the ancient routes in the hunting grounds of the San Bushmen. This opens a window into the world of uniquely adapted desert flora and fauna. Game species found in the reserve include gemsbok, mountain and plains zebra, springbok, red hartebeest, bat-eared fox, spotted hyena, Cape fox, and African wildcats. The rockier areas are inhabited by kudu, klipspringer, baboon, and leopard, while the dunes are inhabited by a rich and diverse micro-fauna. Hot-air ballooning trips in this pristine area offers vistas across the Diamond Coast and Sossusvlei. While a champagne breakfast at the end of the trip brings one back to earth gently.

The main tent features a cozy lounge area, a dining room, and even an open-plan kitchen where guests can chat with the chef. Wolwedans properties are known for their master chefs and excellent cuisine paired with a sampling of fine South African wines. At night, the campfire on the sundowner deck is the place to gather with a cold drink and a story to swap with fellow travelers. The camp requires a minimum stay of two nights.
