Onguma The Fort

PLAN MY TRIP

Onguma The Fort is Afro-Arabic in look and feel, with substantial walls, stone cladding, and a tower the gazes across Fischer’s Pan toward Etosha.

Accommodations consist of twelve mini-suites as well as the Sultan Suite. The mini-suites are adjacent to the Main Fort and stretch out to the north and the south. Each suite has a spacious en-suite bathroom with both an inside and an outside shower. In addition, each suite has a bar, fridge, air cooling system, and tea/coffee station. Wooden decks lead towards an outside seating area, the perfect spot to unwind on a comfortable sun-lounger. The Sultan Suite is located in the tower and features a large, exquisitely designed bedroom. An adjacent lounge leads out to the private viewing deck. The lounge is equipped with a satellite television, bar, fridge, and telephone. The large bathroom has both an open shower area as well as a bath in which to soak away the activities of the day.

Onguma Game Reserve stretches across 84,015 acres of protected land. Plains game such as kudu, giraffe, eland, oryx, hartebeest, zebra, and impala roam freely, and predators including lion, cheetah, and leopard are frequently sighted. The reserve even boasts its own family of Black Rhino. During the Namibian summer months, when the rains have finally come, the park becomes a birdwatcher’s paradise. Over 300 bird species migrate to the wetlands and the once-dry riverbeds. The private reserve also borders Fischer’s Pan, offering easy access to Etosha, Namibia’s premier wildlife destination.

Activities at The Fort include game drives both in the reserve and into Etosha. But one of the great highlights of the region is a guided bush walk. These walks offer a focused nature experience and usually start just after sunrise. Lasting between two and three hours, walkers are encouraged to take in the sights and sounds of the smaller things in the bush and to learn fascinating details about trees, insects, birds, smaller animals, and even tracking.

Moroccan and Indian themes combine seamlessly with beautiful antique windows and doors. The courtyard with its imposing water feature will cool and delight. Across the courtyard is the spacious and exquisitely decorated lounge with the open-air dining room. A large wooden deck is the place to relax and observe the activities at the nearby waterhole. Dining can be at the indoor or outside dining areas, with a choice of eating at the lantern-lit pool, in the courtyard, or by the water feature. Refreshments are available at the tower bar, and the wine cellar has an excellent range of South African wines, specially selected to complement the Onguma Fort menu.
