Popa Falls Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Set on the banks of the mighty Kavango River, Popa Falls Camp is a lovely and comfortable safari camp within an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Accommodations at the camp consist of a campsite, two-Sleeper River Cabins, four-Sleeper River Chalets, and Luxury River Cabins. The cabins and chalets are snuggled up against the riverbank facing the thick forest of Hippo Island. Each chalet includes two twin beds draped in mosquito netting, a dresser, air-conditioning, and an en suite bathroom with a shower. The cabins have similar facilities but include double rooms with an interconnecting door. There is also barbecue facilities outside. For budget travelers, there are ten campsites available and even three larger campsites for groups.

The camp is located on the banks of the Kavango River which in turn flows into the Botswana Delta. It is only nine miles from the Mahango Game Park. This remote region of north eastern Namibia is made up of perennial rivers, magnificent indigenous woodlands, riverine forests, floodplains, and reed – lined channels. The Popa Fall are more of a series of cascades created by a quartzite ledge that causes the river to split into numerous channels. A wide variety of wildlife species lives here including elephant, hippo, buffalo, crocodile, red Lechwe, reedbuck, roan, and sable antelope. It’s also a bird lover’s paradise with over 450 recorded bird species found in the area.

Anglers love this section of Kunene on the Kavango River. Tigerfish, threespot, and green-headed tilapia are just some of the species of game fish that can be found in the Kavango River. Fishermen should bring their own fishing tackle and buy a fishing permit from the office at Popa Falls. A great way to discover the beauties and animals of the region is via a houseboat cruise. Guests of the camp can either take a self-driven tour of Mahango Game Park or take advantage of the camp’s own morning and afternoon game drives conducted by expert guides in a 4×4 safari vehicle.

A simple and clean camp, the main timber and thatch camp building houses a restaurant with both an indoor and outdoor dining room. Drinks can be enjoyed at the Classic Jetty Bar. While locally make souvenirs, arts, and crafts can be purchased from the curio shop. The camp’s pool provides a cool respite from the afternoon sun. Laundry service is available upon request.
