Namibia

Ongava Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Built into the side of a low hill along the southern border of Namibia’s Etosha National Park, Ongava Lodge overlooks a waterhole frequented by a cross section of the region’s wildlife.

Luxury accommodations at the lodge consist of fourteen rock-and-thatch en-suite chalets. Thirteen of the rooms include two comfortable twin beds. The chalets en-suite bathrooms come with double basins, plus indoor and outdoor showers. A private viewing deck lets guests relax and enjoy the beauties of the plains. There is also one family chalet available that sleeps up to four people. Each room has its own bathroom and entrance that are joined by a boardwalk. Other amenities include air-conditioning, overhead fans, tea and coffee facilities, mosquito nets, and hairdryers.

The Ongava Game Reserve borders Etosha National Park, the wildlife epicenter of the country, and is thus the ideal base from which to experience Namibia’s natural wonders. In addition to its proximity to an incredible diversity and concentration of wildlife, the camp commands panoramic views of the African savanna. By itself, the Ongava Game Reserve boasts 125 square miles of prime wildlife viewing territory and works hard to protect its wildlife including research efforts to study rhino populations. Once an unproductive cattle farm where lions were shot on sight, the lions now enjoy several flourishing prides and are once again the hunters not the hunted.

Guided game drives are conducted by expert trackers and explore the wildlife in both Ongava or neighboring Etosha. These safaris promise sightings of all the region’s distinctive wildlife including gemsbok, springbok, hartebeest, ostrich, black and white rhino, lion, and elephant. Half-day or full-day trips into Etosha also include viewings of the Etosha Pan, a salt pan so large it can be seen from space. For the more adventurous traveler, the camp also offers guided game tracking on foot for a chance to take a more intimate look at the flora and fauna and even track rhino. The camp’s hide is the perfect spot to wait and watch the wildlife like giraffes, zebras, and rhinos come for a drink.

The camp’s main lounge and dining areas have impressive views over the camp’s busy waterhole. There is also an inviting pool to cool off in the heat of the day. Delicious meals are either served in the main dining area under thatch or on the dining deck under the stars. A curio shop is available for any must have souvenirs.
