Kalahari Farmhouse

PLAN MY TRIP

Located on the borders of the village of Stampriet in the fertile valley of the seasonal Auob River, Kalahari Farmhouse is a small and delightful property decorated in the Cape Dutch style.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of only eleven stone chalets. The standard twin rooms overlook the gardens of the old farmhouse and include two twin beds and an en suite bathroom with a shower. At the end of the garden, the standard four-bed family room is an open and airy room with four, comfy beds. For those families looking for a little more privacy, the standard family room comes with two adjoining rooms that each include two twin beds and an en suite bathroom with a shower and a bath. Additional amenities include colorful patchwork quilts, warm fireplaces, air-conditioning, a safe, tea and coffee maker, and a private veranda for relaxing and taking in the views.

The lodge is situated in an unforgettable location in the Kalahari Desert near the seasonal Auob River that fills up during the rainy season. The red dunes stand in stark contrast to the white, calcareous rocks of the valley uncovered by the Auob River. Various species of antelope, giraffe, small mammals, and Namibian birds can be spotted in this region of the world-famous Kalahari Desert. Sprinbok, zebra, and wildebeest are often spotted here too. While weavers build their massive nests in the spiky camelthorn trees.

Daily game drives take place in the early morning or at sunset and are conducted by expert guides in comfortable 4×4 vehicles. This is the best way to explore the Kalahari dunes and its wildlife. Each game drive takes about three hours. There are walking trails that venture out from the lodge along well-marked paths, so guests can explore the Kalahari on their own and discover the local flora and fauna. A star walk is an ideal way to end the day.

Constructed in the heyday of Karakul farming fifty years ago, the old manor house houses the reception area, bar, and restaurant. Right next door, the small Gondwana’s Self Sufficiency Centre grows its produce for the collection of lodges around the country including the farmhouse. Fresh milk comes from the cows, chickens wander at will and pigs grunt from their pens, while the restaurant reaps the benefit of fresh ingredients for its delicious meals. The lodge’s pool invites guest to cool off during the heat of the day or lounge about on the sundeck.
