Hotel Heinitzburg

PLAN MY TRIP

Hotel Heinitzburg is rather romantically linked to Count von Schwerin, who (history has it) built the structure for his fiancée Margarethe von Heinitz.

It was a private residence for many years before being commissioned as a hotel. It is one of three castles in the Windhoek hills all designed by architect Wilhelm Sander. The others are Schwerinsburg, which is the official residence of the Italian Ambassador to Namibia, and Sanderburg, which is a private residence.

In the hills overlooking the Windhoek city center, Hotel Heinitzburg is luxuriously decorated and is superbly managed by a formidable mother and son team, Beate and Tibor Raith. The Raith family is well known both locally and further afield for the quality of the meat and delicatessen products they sell under the Raith label. And since Tibor is a talented chef, dining at Hotel Heinitzburg is a special highlight.

Hotel Heinitzburg has sixteen spacious and beautifully decorated en-suite rooms. The rooms are equipped with air-conditioning/heating units, direct telephone lines, electronic safes, mini-bars, televisions with cable channels, and music facilities. The poolside twin deluxe rooms have both a shower and a bath, and every room boasts magnificent views of this capital city and the Khomas Hochland Mountains that surround it.

A full buffet and English breakfast are offered daily and may be enjoyed on the garden terrace or in the Knights Room. Lunch is offered at the Garden Terrace, the Wine Cellar, and The Knight’s Room. The Terrace is also open all day for coffee, cakes, snacks, and sundowner cocktails, and the views from the Terrace are awe-inspiring.

Leo’s at the Castle is a gourmet restaurant overlooking the Windhoek skyline, and guests can dine in style in elegant surroundings. The meals are superb; savour masterfully prepared game dishes or enjoy dishes inspired by France or Italy. The cuisine is truly international and is complimented by wines available from the most extensive wine cellar in the country.

As one would expect when visiting a hotel of this quality, the lounge, bar, meeting and conference rooms, restaurant, and outdoor swimming pool are equally stylish and extremely comfortable. Travelers who enjoy history will enjoy the hotel’s association with the colonial past and the artwork in the Knight’s Room.

Windhoek has so much to offer that it would be a pity not to spend multiple days taking in the historic sites of the colonial past, going to the Hero’s Acre Memorial to those of the indigenous population who withstood oppression. Do not miss out on the craft markets and be on the lookout for deals in the outstanding curio shops.
