Namibia

Fish River Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Luxurious and comfortable Fish River Lodge is the only lodge located directly on the edge of Namibia's Fish River Canyon.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of twenty elegant chalets. There is a choice between a double room with one large bed or the twin rooms with two beds. Every chalet features open and airy rooms that include a fan and a separate dressing area. The en suite bathrooms come with double vanities, both indoor and outdoor showers, and flush toilets. A private veranda also includes an outdoor bed so guests can sleep under a blanket of stars or just admire the views.

The lodge enjoys prime views of Fish River Canyon in the south of Namibia. Fish River is the largest canyon in Africa. The massive ravine is in total about 100 miles long, up to sixteen miles wide, and in places almost 1,804 feet deep. The 403-mile long Fish River is the longest interior river in the nation. The river flows intermittently with flooding usually occurring in late summer while the rest of the year it becomes a chain of long narrow pools. Unlike the Grand Canyon, Fish River Canyon was not carved out by the river but a result of a fracture in the earth’s crust that collapsed the valley bottom forming a broad valley running north-south about 500 million years ago. Animals are scarce in this harsh environment though there are Hartmann’s zebras, kudu, and klipspringer and sometimes leopard.

Fish River Canyon is renowned for its challenging hikes. The lodge offers a half or full-day hike of the canyon from April to September with the aid of an expert guide. Hikers can climb down the sheer face of the upper canyon wall, traverse the rocky wilderness, and descend through a spectacular gorge while enjoying a picnic lunch. For an easier walk, there is a guided canyon rim walk with a chance to learn more about the local flora and fauna. Or for those wishing to see the canyon without all the hiking there are seven-hour canyon day drives with a stop for refreshments by the river or a fly-in visit with breakfast at the Canyon Nature Park. The more adventurous can partake in the five-night canyon hike from Fish River Lodge while the camp crew sets up tents every night so guests can relax.

The main lodge houses a restaurant, bar, and lounge. The restaurant dishes up good-home cooked food served on handcrafted tables from reclaimed wood next to crackling fires in winter or outside on the deck in summer. There is both an indoor bar and an outdoor bar overlooking the cool pool.
