Khorixas Rest Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Just outside Khorixas, the traditional capital of Damaraland, Khorixas Restcamp is an oasis of comfort in this vast and arid desert.

Accommodations at the camp consist of a variety of rooms. There are ten Single Rooms with an en suite bathroom with shower, a tea station, and air conditioning. The twenty-six bush chalets have two beds each and even include a barbecue area for every two rooms. The camp has two family units that are comprised of two bedrooms and a self-catering kitchen and also equipped with TVs. For the budget traveler, there are twenty-five campsites with a kitchen area, a barbecue, and shared bathrooms.

The camp is located just outside the city of Khorixas in the dramatically beautiful Damaraland en route to the ancient Twyfelfontein engravings. The lodge sits within one of the driest and most desolate regions in all of Africa. Because water is scarce, this scrubland is home to a varied assortment of desert-adapted wildlife including elephants and black rhinos who can go for days without water. Gemsbok, kudu, springbok, Hartman’s mountain zebra, southern giraffe, gemsbok, lion, cheetah, and spotted and brown hyena call this desert home too. Birdwatchers will delight in the over 240 species recorded here.

The region is great for hiking and guests are invited to explore Damaraland on their own. This is the best way to discover the local flora and fauna in depth. The popular sites of Burnt Mountain, Brandberg, Organ Pipes are within easy driving distance. Of course, the big draw to the region is the Twyfelfontein engravings. The Twyfelfontein site has the largest concentration of hunter-gatherer rock engravings in the whole of Africa including a series of over 2,500 engravings that are carved on more than 200 sandstone blocks found in the area that date back to 6,000 years ago.

The main camp tends to the needs of its guests with a comfortable dining room with an ala carte menu, a curio shop for souvenirs, and refreshing swimming pool. The restaurant’s bar area also features a television and pool table for a little evening amusement.
