Serengeti Under Canvas

PLAN MY TRIP

A luxurious semi-permanent tented camp, Serengeti Under Canvas provides the ultimate Tanzanian safari experience.

Accommodations at the camp focus on the comfort and splendor expected of an &Beyond property. In true Bedouin style, guests can glamp in style under nine large canvas tents complete with soft double beds, crisp linens, and crystal chandeliers. The tents are decorated in custom made Indian rugs and polished brass samovars and include a day bed, two deck chairs, two directors’ chairs and a cooler box containing ice and drinks. Each tent has an al fresco hot water bucket shower and flush toilet. To preserve the integrity of the bush infrastructure, the tents have no running water or electricity but compensate with battery powered lamps and flashlights and basins with a jug of hot water. Electronics can be charged from power outlets in the game drive vehicles.

The camp is very mobile and follows the Great Migration of wildebeest throughout the Serengeti and the adjacent Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya in search of prime grazing. The Serengeti is home to literally millions of large herbivores, with more than 35 species of plains-dwelling mammals, as well as the accompanying carnivores and prolific birdlife. Each year, almost two million wildebeest, zebra, eland and Thomson’s gazelle follow the annual rains. The camp moves between Ndutu, Grumeti, Seronera and Kogatende meaning that at any time of the year this camp will be in the best location for game viewing.

Game drives are tailored to meet guest’s needs with a choice between two shorter daily drives or one long drive with a delicious picnic lunch. Besides following the wildebeest migration, the Serengeti’s also famous for its large lion populations, plus chances to see the elusive cheetah. Hot air balloon rides afford unforgettable views of Serengeti bush. Full-day trips to Lake Victoria provide the opportunities for fishing or a traditional canoe ride, as well as a visit to a local village for encounters with the traditional doctor, kids at the Lukungu Primary School, or village dancers. In addition, tours to Olduvai Gorge, known as the cradle of mankind due to the discovery of the oldest homo-sapiens remains by Mary Leakey may be booked as well as tours to the nearby Shifting Sands of volcanic ash dunes.

An all-inclusive resort, rates include three meals, soft drinks, local wines, beers, and spirits, as well as refreshment on game drives. A dedicated sitting and dining tent is furnished with deep sofas, antiques, and books. Each tent comes with a private butler. Delicious meals are served on sparkling crystal and silver with resplendent views of the savanna. At the end of a full and exciting day, guests gather around the camp fire to relax and swap stories.
