Sand Rivers Selous

PLAN MY TRIP

Set on the banks of the Rufiji River, Sand Rivers Selous is a comfortable and stylish safari lodge within Selous Game Reserve.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of eight stone and thatched cottages. There are five open-fronted river rooms perched on the Rufiji. Each room has large, comfortable beds and an en suite bathroom with double vanities, a shower, and a flush toilet. The three hillside suites still look onto the river and have an extra sitting area and a private plunge pool. A shaded deck provides the perfect place to relax and watch the river and even the occasional monkey.

Set on the banks of the Rufiji River in the 19,000-square mile Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania, the lodge is part of the Selous-Niassa eco-system and is close to Steigers Gorge, Lake Tagalala, and the Beho Beho Hot Springs. With a mix of riverine forest, miombo woodland, acacia thicket, palm groves, open grasslands, steep wooded hills, lakes, marshes, and sand rivers; Sand River Selous has one of the most striking locations in Tanzania. The Reserve is the oldest one in Africa and is well-known for its high density of animals. The abundance of wildlife found in the Selous includes large herds of elephant, buffalo, and many antelope species. Wildebeest, zebra, and giraffe, the endangered black rhino, warthog, anteater, and jackal are also frequently seen.

Activities are many and diverse. Boat trips on the Rufiji are best for viewing water fowl and hippo as well as offering a unique perspective on the plains game as they come down to the water to drink. Game drives in 4×4 vehicles led expert guides cover large swathes of terrain quickly in pursuit of animal encounters such as lion, leopard, and packs of the fascinating wild dog. For a more intimate and detailed look at the Reserve, a walking safari examines smaller flora and fauna often missed from the vehicles. Fly-camping is perfect for those guests wishing to truly sleep under the stars in a mosquito-netted tent on a soft mattress and pillow with the sounds of nature for a lullaby.

The main mess area is spacious and open-fronted with cool river breezes wafting through. There’s a chill-out area near the library. Delicious meals can be enjoyed anywhere including around the main pool, privately tucked away in a quiet corner of the mess, or on the social managers table. The bar is the best place to be at the end of the day for a cold drink and a chat with a new friend.
