Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Located at the highest point on Ngorongoro Crater’s entire rim, Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge offers unparalleled views of the caldera and comfortable accommodations.

Luxury lodgings consist of ninety-seven rooms. Ninety-one of the rooms come with two queen-sized beds and six have twin beds. To blend in with its surroundings the rooms are themed around traditionally circular African houses with conical roofs, and decorated with examples of Africa’s rich tapestry of artistic traditions by way of rich woodcarvings and sculptures. Each room features luxuriously appointed bathrooms with spacious showers. Other amenities include central heating and hot water bottles for chilly evenings.

The lodge is situated on the eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater in the volcanic highlands of Tanzania. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest, inactive, and completely intact caldera. Apart from the main caldera, Ngorongoro contains two other volcanic craters: Olmoti and Empakai, the first is famous for its spectacular waterfalls, and the latter houses a deep lake and verdant, green walls. Dense forests fed by the fertile volcanic earth provide a home for over 25,000 resident mammals from predators to prey. Here guests can spy large herds of wildebeest, buffalo, zebras, and Thomson’s gazelles as well as their predators the cheetahs, jackals, lions, and hyenas. The forest, marshes, and highland meadows are also a favorite of the elephants.

Popular activities in Ngorongoro include a late afternoon crater view hike or full-day Empakai Crater hike to a bird walker’s paradise. Of course, the biggest draw are the game drives to the crater floor. Visitors can view the pink flamingos flocking to the shallow Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake. Nearby hippos play in the mud of Gorigor Swamp and the Ngoitokitok Springs. The north of the Crater is where most of the resident game lives because of the access to drier, open grasslands. Other nearby excursions include tours to Olduvai Gorge, known as the cradle of mankind due to the discovery of the oldest homo-sapien remains by Mary Leakey may be booked as well as tours to the nearby Shifting Sands of volcanic ash dunes.

The main lodge building is a split-level structure housing a grand and colorful lobby and a cozy lounge decorated with original African art pieces and furnishings. The Lemala Hill restaurant offers an exquisite blend of continental and local cuisine and is fitted with ceiling to floor glass walls that provide guests with panoramic views of the crater. Meals here include a breakfast buffet and ala carte lunch and dinner. There is also a crater view bar and refreshing swimming pool available.
