Kigelia Ruaha

PLAN MY TRIP

Connect with the soul of Africa at Kigelia Camp, a special Tanzanian destination in the heart of the rugged Ruaha wilderness.

A seasonal camp, Kigelia is named for the sausage trees surrounding it. Accommodations consist of six double tents, nestled in the shade of the sausage and baobab trees. The spacious and airy tents are well-furnished with locally crafted pale wood furniture. The en suite bathrooms come with outdoor hot safari-style bucket shower under the stars. There is a family tent which has two adjoining en-suite bedrooms. Each tent comes with a private veranda with stunning views of the Reserve.

The camp is located in Ruaha National Park. Ruaha’s diverse landscape uncovers baobab forests, rocky hills, and the Great Ruaha River. However, the main feature is its exceptional wildlife viewing. Elephants are particularly well represented, with well over 10,000 individuals. Plains game such as zebra, greater and lesser kudu, buffalo, and giraffe flourish in great numbers, along with accompanying predators like lion, leopard, and cheetah. Birdwatchers will want to have a fine set of binoculars to catch sightings of the hundreds of species that call the area home. The Ruaha River also provides an ecosystem on its own with its huge Nile crocodiles, pods of hippo, and plenty of other smaller mammals and reptiles.

Daily game drives are conducted in custom-designed open top Land Cruisers. Tailored to guest interests, each game drive is led by a highly qualified guide and can last a full day, if desired. This is the best way to spot the multitude of wildlife that calls Ruaha home including big-maned lions, great herds of elephant, the handsome greater kudu, or statuesque sable. Night drives are perfect for observing the nightly activities of the nocturnal animals in the park. Guided walks led by a national parks ranger are available upon request and provide a more intimate look at the local flora and fauna.

Equipped with the quality services of local craftsmen, the main lodge and luxury tents showcase beautiful baskets, mats, furniture, and more. The large dining area also includes a relaxing lounge, comprehensive library, and gift shop. There is also an additional dining area overlooking the sand river. At night, guests gather around the fire pit for a drink and a chance to swap stories of the day’s adventures.
