Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

The only lodge in Lake Manyara National Park, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge offers a private setting with diverse wildlife and game-rich habitats including the rare tree-climbing lions.

Accommodations consist of ten secluded treehouse suites set in the boughs of ancient mahogany trees. The suites are crafted from local timber and makuti palm fronds. Each suite features elegant bedrooms fitted with contemporary furnishing in neutral colors and textures, overhead fans, and billowing mosquito nets over two twin beds that can be converted to doubles. The en suite bathrooms have freestanding baths with a forest view and an outdoor shower. The family suite has two en suite bedrooms and can house up to two adults and two children. Each treehouse suite includes large decks suspended above the forest floor.

The only place in the world known to be home to tree-climbing lions, this remote corner of Lake Manyara also provides an ideal habitat for many other varieties of impressive species. The Park provides sightings of huge elephant and buffalo herds, cheetah, Maasai giraffe, impala, olive baboon, Sykes monkey, hippo, Egyptian mongoose, and many more. Thousands of flamingoes, as well as over 400 other bird species flock to the soda lake making the area a bird lover’s paradise. Cape clawless otter, klipspringer, and short-eared galago are some of the other park’s residents.

The daily game drives are conducted by expert guides in open 4×4 vehicles. As the only permanent lodge in the Park, the lodge has exclusive access to areas that day visitors can’t reach. For an additional cost, a night drive takes in the nocturnal doings of animals such as shy genets, lithe civet cats, and prickly porcupines. There are also mountain biking excursions through the nearby Mayoka community led by an expert &Beyond guide. Cultural tours take in the local Maasai villages and schools to learn about their rich culture and traditions.

The main area of the lodge is also suspended above the floor on generous decks with excellent views of the forest. At night, delicious and romantic dinners are served in the boma surrounded by torchlight and lined by dugout canoes. Each morning, guests can sample hot tea or coffee with biscuits or rusks before departing on their morning game drive. After the drive, there is a delightful full breakfast, complete with fresh fruit, cheese, and assorted hot dishes. Lunches are enjoyed at the interactive kitchen. There is a refreshing pool making it the perfect place for an afternoon swim. The lodge even has a safari shop selling local community craft work and safari clothing.
