Nestled among tall evergreens on the banks of a tributary of the Grumeti River, Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is positioned perfectly for a front-row seat for the dramatic river crossings of the great migration.

Accommodations at the camp consist of nine luxurious and spacious suites plus one two-bedroom family suite. Each suite includes an en-suite bathroom and a private plunge pool. Sliding doors open onto private decks with stunning views of the river and the resident pod of hippos.

Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is located on a tributary of the Grumeti River within the Serengeti. Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park, as well as a world heritage site, the Serengeti is famous for its annual great migration, when millions of wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelle flood the plains in search of fresh grazing land. The drama only increases as the herds cross the Grumeti River while large Nile crocodiles lay in wait for a meal. The river also attracts large herds of buffalo and elephant, while the open plains are the ideal habitat for cheetah. Without even leaving camp, black and white colobus monkeys can be spotted chattering away in the trees.

The featured activity at Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is of course daily game drives. Guests venture out onto the plains led by expert guides and trackers in open 4×4 vehicles with canvas canopies. This is the best way to observe the migration as well as the predators following the herds. The area is known for its large lion prides and extensive clans of hyena. For an aerial view, hot-air balloon rides glide over the Serengeti and the mass of plains game below. Full-day trips to Lake Victoria include fishing, sightseeing, game-viewing, and cultural tours. There is an option to stop at the &Beyond Foundation at Lukungu Primary School as well as fishing trips in traditional canoes, and visits to the traditional doctor. A picnic lunch is enjoyed on the banks of the lake before returning to camp.

The main guest areas include spacious, open-fronted sitting and dining areas and a central circular bar. Meals are served on the extensive deck, which, like everywhere else at the lodge, offers beautiful views towards the river. At night, the dining area opens up to a traditional African boma, where dinner is served beneath a canopy of stars. Traditional fires known as jikos and outdoor ovens produce tantalizing foods, as everyone gathers around the fire to swap stories and listen to the sounds of nature.
