Kiba Point Selous

PLAN MY TRIP

Set on the banks of the Rufiji River, Kiba Point Selous is a private lodge ensuring guests their own exclusive little slice of paradise in Selous Game Reserve.

A sole-use property, the lodge is perfect for families or small groups. There are four luxury rooms available, each one poised on a raised deck for better views of the river. The rooms are open to the bush but can be zipped up at night and have high thatched roofs and canopied mosquito nets draped over the beds. The open-fronted en suite bathroom includes both an inside and an outside shower. But the best feature of the rooms are the private decks which not only provide a perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauties of the river, they also come with a refreshing plunge pool.

The camp is located in the 19,000-square mile Selous Game Reserve. The Reserve is the oldest one in Africa and is well-known for its high density of animals. The abundance of wildlife found in the Selous includes large herds of elephant, buffalo, and many antelope species. Wildebeest, zebra, and giraffe, the endangered black rhino, warthog, anteater, and jackal are also frequently seen. And of course, there are the many predators such as lion, leopard, and packs of the fascinating wild dog. The nearby Rufiji is the life blood of the park and a big draw for the wildlife.

As an exclusive property, all activities revolve around the guests and their pace. Activities are many and diverse. Boat trips on the Rufiji are best for viewing water fowl and hippo and also offer a unique perspective on the plains game as they come down to the water to drink. Game drives in 4×4 vehicles led expert guides cover large swathes of terrain quickly in pursuit of animal encounters. For a more intimate and detailed look at the Reserve, a walking safari examines smaller flora and fauna often missed from the vehicles. Fly-camping is perfect for those guests wishing to truly sleep under the stars in a mosquito-netted tent on a soft mattress and feather pillow with the sounds of nature for a lullaby. There is even a three-course candlelit meal and a glass of chilled wine.

The main thatched mess tent includes comfortable sofas and chairs for an afternoon of general laziness. There is also a communal pool for an afternoon dip as well as a library and bar. Breakfast can be enjoyed on a sand bank in Stigler’s Gorge watching elusive monkey-hunting crowned eagles. While lunches can be eaten in the shade of a palm tree as the animals pass by on their way to the river.
