The Highlands

PLAN MY TRIP

Situated on the edge of the mountain forest hugging the Olmoti volcano to the north of Ngorongoro Crater, The Highlands is a unique and modern safari camp far from the other camps in the region.

One of a kind accommodations at the camp consist of eight high-style perspex-and-canvas domed suites inspired by traditional Maasai bomas, with two triples available on request. Each suite features a comfortable king-sized bed and floor to ceiling bay windows for sweeping views of the stunning landscape beyond. The large en-suite bathrooms come with hot running water, showers, and flushing toilets. There are even wood-burning stoves in the rooms for cozying up to on cold winter evenings. Twin and double beds are options as well. The family tent is specially designed to keep everyone from feeling cramped. They also include two bathrooms and outdoor showers. For privacy and romance, the honeymoon tent has a king-sized bed, a seating area, a large elevated deck, and an outdoor hot tub.

The camp is set in a private location at the edge of the mountain forest that sits on the Olmoti volcano. It is also only twenty-five miles from the beautiful Ngorongoro Crater. The crater is in fact an intact caldera, formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago. Dense forests fed by the fertile volcanic earth provide a home for over 25,000 resident mammals from predators to prey. Here guests can spy large herds of wildebeest, buffalo, zebras, and Thomson’s gazelles as well as their predators the cheetahs, jackals, lions, and hyenas. The forest, marshes, and highland meadows are also a favorite of the elephants.

There are plenty of thrilling activities to choose from at the camp. Adventurers can choose to do the Olmoti climb which follows an ancient Maasai cattle trail through mountain forest, grasslands, and rocky outcrops. The climb is a bird and butterfly watchers dream, but the real reward is the magnificent view of the crater from the top. A half-day excursion into the Empakaai Crater, takes guests accompanied by an NCA ranger on a walk to the sparkling soda lake on the crater floor, famous for the pink flamingo that congregate on its shores. Of course, a game drive to the famous Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most game-rich areas in the world is a must. There’s even time for a delicious picnic lunch under the trees. Cultural visits to a local Maasai village is a great way to learn about their rich traditions and way of life.

At the heart of the camp is an authentic indoor fireplace designed to emulate the traditional East African campfire experience. Perfect for unwinding with a book or a drink, the camp has a library and an extensive bar. Hearty gourmet meals are homemade using fresh, organic ingredients and supplies sourced from the Karatu area. The camp also sits in a malaria-free area.
